petronas and F1???
hi i was just wondering if anyone knows anything about what petronas plans to do for next year in terms of their involvement in f1... Now that Sauber is turning into BMW i'm sure Petronas can't be involved with BMW as i thought they have a direct involvement with Castrol through both f1 and their road cars...

Petronas
Maybe they should buy Minardi from Paul Stoddart, since anyone could do a better job then him.

Ron Dennis believes Minardi under Stoddart is the "most efficient team in F1" for what they do with what they have. |

But what they have is not enough so theirs no point in running. The should sell the team too someone who has money and can be just as efficent but compettive. You do a sport to compete not be efficent. Efficenency is a trait or attribute that needs to be complimented by other things to be succesful in F1 and if your last every time except if someone has a break down or an accident then your not really competeing at the sport of racing.
Do you get what im trying to say Kicking Back? |

There will always be a back of the grid team, and Minardi is there for over 20 years now, so leave them there!

Well we come to think of back grid teams as developmental teams for young drivers, but Minardi does not bring in the best drivers into the sport anymore it brings the Richest and I think thats hurting F1 in terms of not getting the best talent they can get because drivers with more money get the early drives over them. If minardi could support them selves with out having to rely so much on the money the driver brings like they were able to back in the day then I wouldn't have as much problem with them as I do now.
But your right their will always be a back of the grid team, but do they have to be four seconds of the pace? |

Castrol sponsored Williams in 97 when they ran Renault power. 3 years before the BMW power came.

No That's Petrobras, the Brazilian fuel company. Petronas is a Malaysian company and have sponsored Sauber since 1996/7. |

Of course. ooops, being a tool there. Anyway I was right about them and BMW not being related.
I guess they can still be involved. BMW will want decent sponsorship and Petronas could still be a partner. As far as I am aware BMW aren't tied to any similar company. |

Hence, my thought that since BMW won't need Petronas' money to pay for the engines, if Sir Frank is quick enough, he should get on the phone to Petronas and ask them for a sponsorship package to pay for Cosworth engines. I think F1 Racing (the magazine, not the website) estimated Petronas' contribution at approximately US$28 million, so that's a hefty chunk of change that might be sitting still waiting for somebody to come in and grab it. |

I'm sure that $28million would be very useful to BMW too.

yes but although Castrol was involved with Williams before BMW came onboard i'm pretty sure they are now directly linked with BMW as i think they are the official oil of all new BMW road cars and also involved in other BMW motorsports things such as all the Formula BMW series and BMW touring cars.... I think BMW/ Petronas partnership will be very unlikely due to this... and i know Petronas put a lot of effort into their F1 program in terms of promotion back in malaysia so it would be odd to see them bail out of F1... |

One possibility is Petronas teaming up with Red Bull, they don't seem to have any petroleum product sponsor.
