Hang on BFC, i'm a bit confused, which Alan Jones?

The Bloke that owns the licences grocery just down the end of my street Alan Jones?
OR.

The Sydney shock-jock, Race Riot inciter, had somthing to do with that bum-sniffer rugby game Alan Jones ?
OR,

The previously bankrupt, former F1 World Champ, V8 Supercar Racer who abused race officials at the drop of a hat, current figure-head for Australia's A1 GP entry, bloke who stole Phillip Morris off Seto, Ex channel nine commentator Alan Jones ?????

I mean $ 43 bucks for a block of VB cans is a bit rich, but 'Big Al has hardly built a Dynasty from flogging beer to me ????

Ahh, fond memories all. Loved the story of the animosity between AJ & Piquet... and the event, which escapes into one of the large black holes in my memory, where Jones pressured Piquet until he crashed... says Jones: "one of the few times I ever burst out laughing in the car"...

I'll watch with interest.

The previously whatever, racer who abused officials at the drop of a hat, bloke who stole Phillip Morris from Seto, etc, etc.

Sheesh! Pick the negatives, why don't you?

I'd prefer to describe the same bloke as Australia's second F1 World Champion. One of only two drivers (from many) who took that brave and difficult path from here to England and Europe to do his best - and succeeded. The guy who somehow managed to gain a drive with a little, upcoming F1 team - after living with the seat out of his pants for a few years, and through combining all his skills with that team, took on the biggest and best - and won. The bloke who (in typical Aussie fashion) decided he'd rather be back here having fun - and walked away from it all.

As someone who crewed for him for a bit in 1979 and 1980, and rejoined him in his own team back here with his Falcon and RX7, I get a bit touchy when people take cheap shots. He was one tough, uncompromising racer. A very loyal bloke, and great fun to be around. Nelson Piquet and you mightn't agree - but, I like the boy.

..and Brett Lee was charged with dissent after standing up to the umpire today, and Wally Lewis stood toe-to-toe with the ref, and John McEnroe abused line judges and the umpire, and on and on it goes. Maybe some officials deserved it, maybe they didn't. Yes, competitors shouldn't abuse officials - especially voulunteers, but there are times when I understand why some competitors do.

Give us your view on Alan Jones and his 'discussions' with race officials. Be specific, don't just rehash hearsay. Tell us what you would have done in the same situation - should you have ever managed to be in the same situation.

Maybe we should just leave it here, eh?

Me too, but all the stuff that gained him notoriety is part of the allure of Alan Jones, for mine anyway. I guess it's "the wild colonial boy" sort of thing...

I've enjoyed the bits and pieces that you've shared from time to time, regarding your association with AJ. I've admired him as you describe... I loved Prost's descriptions of him in his autobio, and I always enjoyed watching him when the eyes were on. While I miss seeing him as part of the local motorsport circus, I enjoy any media bites I can get... and will certainly tune in!

BTW, I remember one 'official' that made AJ see RED. He wasn't a volunteer - he was highly paid. He was a Frenchman, and he was the ultimate wally of all time. The ultimate spoilsport, and someone that even French people made excuses for. All these factors combined to really earn AJ's wrath.

Anyone here remember Jean-Marie Balestre?

If I had been there when AJ abused him, I'd have cheered.

Aarrgh8, I will admit is was a bit of a cheap shot, and to you as a friend of his I apologise.

But as a young race official to be on the recieving end of his acid tongue, and being told " You can't have me charged, I'm Alan Jones" simply leaves me with a poor impression of the man. And no even 15 + years later I wouldn't have done anything differently, even Mark Skaife was never that rude,....... well close but no cigar.

And to all of you that want a cheap shot, maybe the common denominator in these 'disagreements' with drivers IS ME, but I read the rule book, do they ?

Not once did I ever dispute Alan Jones' courage & would never dispute his ability, as he could do some amazing things with a car, and play & win intense mind games with his opposition.

His drive to succeed in Europe, when a lot of other Aussies came home when the money ran out is matched only by that of Mark Webber, but sadly F1 is a different world 25+ years on , and I doubt he will attain the level of success " AJ " did.

We're posting at the same time, but no matter.

I won't defend AJ for absolutely everything, and just like Peter Brock, Allan Moffat, and any other champion we could name, AJ has his faults. I had moved on by the mid-'80s. Still, AJ did some amazing things in Alfas and that Porsche 935, etc. This stuff you're talking about, I really don't remember at all. Not saying it didn't happen, though.

Wasn't he a popular fellow? While I was only a lad when I first started following F1 in the early 80's, I remember the contempt in which J-M B was held b y just about everyone... makes Cocho look like everyone's best mate!

And interestingly two of the people that 'hated' JMB more than any others are now the two that are running the FIA and F1 - Eccles and Max-baby (would I be right in saying that these two are the only two that cause a drivers strike in F1??)

Yes. I believe at some point in the future, the TEGA terrorists and the V8SA sandbaggers will come to blows.

About what? $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

That's not being Nostradamus, just listening to a few franchise owners having a tickle in the press about events, and money, and rounds, and cost cutting and other things.......

Time frame..... well the debate is said to be quite heated now... if China carks it, no reason to think it cant happen this year.

Issue of course is whether this is behind closed doors.. or indeed in public....

When is the mighty TC retiring again?

Concorde Agreement? Shouldnt that be Cessna Agreement?

How come V8Supercar hasnt got its own business jet yet? Surely they have roped OzJet into supporting the series by flying the management elite of the sport business class free of charge wherever we may find a race meeting

I watched the show last night and I think Mr Jones has been humbled into submission by a failed relationship and near bankruptcy. (Spelling?)
He may have thought of himself as being fairly invincible back in the old days, but I found him to be as down to earth as anybody could be during the interview. It changed my opinion of him somewhat.

The pity of Dynasties is that it tried to tell in 30 minutes what should have taken 130. Production was crap, editing poor and the background music could have come from a 1960s Euro porno. Obviously made by People Who Have No Idea. Probably the first year media group from Nanango University.

For what is a mainstream program and not just an indulgence for us enthusiasts, I thought it stood up pretty well.

I thought the production values were good, nothing really grated (eg there weren't any obvious mistakes) and they interviewed everyone of note.

So what if the onboard F1 footage came from a Lotus and they didn't mention that as a driver Christian isn't a chip off the old block!

I learnt a few things I didn't know.

But it left more questions unanswered about the Alan Jones of today, than it answered.

Is he simply a front man for A1 GP, there as an ex F1 champ attempting to add some credibility to a series that is little more than playtime for a very rich Sheik ?????
