Usa Gp & Tabaco Sponsorship

How come in Sunday's race the Ferrari's couldnt show their Marlboro logo's and Jordan's Benson & Hedges logos were half covered and so were BAR's. But teams like Mclaren had West on Display, and Renault had Mild Seven on display ?. I don't like smoking and want the adverts banned but how come there was one rule for one and one for the other?

I think it's to do with some law in the USA stating that tobacco companies are only allowed to be a visible sponsor in one series. I may be wrong but that's how I understand it.

Rings a bell, I think it was one of the reasons KOOL sponsorship didn't follow Team Green to IRL from CART, as one of their other brands was in CART also.

Or I could be talking bollards...

That is the law as far as i'm aware. Ferrari couldn't show Marlboro as Penske run with Marlboro sponsorship.

In 2001 Penske couldn't run Marlboro sponsorship at Indy, cos they raced in the CART series, I think this was one of the reasons that Penske moved to the IRL.

Court rejects F1 'cry of despair'
From correspondents in Montreal
October 1, 2003

A JUDGE today rejected a request by two businessmen who wanted the Canadian Grand Prix exempted from federal anti-tobacco legislation.

Superior Court Justice Jean Crepeau refused to consider arguments the sponsorship ban would hurt the city's economy by depriving it of millions spent during the Formula One event.

The race was not renewed on the Formula One schedule for next year because of legislation prohibiting the use of tobacco logos at sporting and cultural events. About half the F1 teams are financed by tobacco companies.

Businessman Pierre Dicaire and consultant Daniel Robin had argued the federal tobacco ban, and a similar Quebec law, violated the right of race organisers to exercise their freedom of expression under the Charter of Rights.

In a 20-page written ruling, Crepeau said the request appeared to be a "cry of despair" that was beyond the court's jurisdiction.

Dicaire, a Montreal-area racing promoter, said he may appeal the ruling.

Ottawa has repeatedly refused to relax its anti-tobacco law to save the race, which brings in an estimated $80 million to Montreal
