Is Jaguar in the hunt?
Or is this just another tease? Irvine's time is a tenth off the best time set by Ralf/Williams yesterday, so I think it's meaningful. And look at Yoong's time! Right up with Alonso. Yoong will probably make his F1 debut in Hungary.
Thursday July 19th, 2001 -- Irishman Eddie Irvine and Spaniard Pedro de la Rosa were the surprise of the third day of testing at the Monza circuit, where they topped the timesheets for the Jaguar Racing team. Its nice to see Jaguar at the top of the time sheets, yet its meaningless because its only testing.
Its not qualifying. Not everybody is going as fast as they can. |

They were probably running an underweight car (just like Prost did pre-season, and Arrows the season before), or one in qualifying trim, whilst others were running race distance fuel loads etc...
Testing times really do mean very little in the overall scheme of things - and I believe Jaguar are a long way off 'the hunt'. Last edited by Minardi fan; 19 Jul 2001 at 23:56. |

As much as I would like to see Jag at the front, I think Prost proved in pre season that you can't put any stock in testing, unfortunately.

I thought twice about starting this topic; I realize that testing times are usually meaningless to an outside observer. The reason I went ahead with it (other than the great time from Yoong) is that the Jaguars' times are quite fast on an absolute basis, not just compared to the other cars on that one day. Irvine is 3 seconds faster than his Monza test time on July 4th, and 1.25 faster than his time of the day before. They may have been in semi-qualifying trim, but Irvine ran 13 laps before a suspension failure, so he wasn't on a light fuel load.
Minardi fan speculates it may have been an underweight car. Why? What would be the point? Maybe it's just wishful thinking and naivete, but these times may be an indication that they are finally making progress. |

Why were they on a light fuel load? Easy, they were running a qualfying set up on Irvine's car as they said that qualfying is their weakness and they need more practice. On Pedro's car he ran a practice race which meant that eventually he was on a light fuel load.

Ah but were those laps continuous or did they run (say) four at a time?

Thirteen laps is a long way to go if you are in qualifying trim. One more than allowed isn't it?
