Please, give me some help!
This is one for you (more experienced) camera people. I reluctantly let my elder brother take my Canon EOS300 to Kenya with him while he went on holiday. Despite telling him not to do anything to it other than take pics, he tells me he has tried cleaning it. OK, I thought, fair enough, nice gesture. However, realising that he doesn't know that much about them it worried me when he told me he tried to clean the mirrors inside. Having looked at it myself (I profess to being no expert) I fear he may have permantly damaged it. When looking through the viewfinder you can see smears around the edges. I looked inside and although the mirrors look clean you can see smears. Having looked at his pics it hasn't seemed to affect them, but I do fear that it may be busted.
Anyone got any tips? Would it be worth taking it to my local camera shop for some advice? Please, someone help me as it is the second most valueble thing I have and I can't really afford to replace it. PPPPPPLLLLLLLLLLLEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

I'd clean the mirrors
 Seriously, I clean the mirrors of my now elderly (but absolutely luvverly) EOS100 every year before I go to Le Mans. Very gently, of course, using lint-free cloth and no nasty chemcals, having (very gently again) brushed off (and out) any dust particles. If in doubt, take it into your camera shop to make sure. |

If he's tried to clean the mirror he has probably damaged it. SLR mirrors are front-silvered, which means the silvering is on the face you see when you remove the lens.
Now the good news! The mirror is only there to reflect light passing through the lens into the viewfinder; when you actually take a picture, the mirror flips up out of the way - it has no function in the exposure of the film, so although it looks bad through the viewfinder, the performance of the camera in terms of what the film sees will not be affected. |

Whoa, thank god for some help. You have seriously made me feel loads better. I can't take my mind of it. I'll get on with my economics essay now. I'll still take it to the shop just to make sure. Thanks guys. Now, where did I put my baseball bat?

Hi guys, relax...I have worked in photography for many years and the advise you received is bang on...the mirror only lets you know what is goping to be pic`d it moves out of the way when you actually take a pic...my Nikon F90X has similar problem but no effect on the film plain... don`t worry just carry on taking good pics... as a rescue bod i am not a doc....but i know several dodgy ones trust me i have letters after me name in piccy taking
