World Rallycross R7 - Höljes, Sweden
Ekstrom has WRX and DTM clash for Höljes weekend. Sounds like DTM and IMG have fallen out over Hockenheim and WRX playing second fiddle, but hope to see Mattias compete in the rallycross that weekend.

A few surprises in the entry lists. Never thought OMSE and the Eriksson's would enter.

I wrote this on RallycossRX account: 57 SuperCars makes this one of the few RX rounds worth the travel! Much better than the crappy entries of Mettet and Lydden which aren't even worth travelling from the Netherlands. (The Scandinavian crowd would never accept the level the Belgians and British get)

The only 16 cars idea by IMG of the beginnings of the takeover seems farther away then ever. I wonder why.

I think OMSE have done a pretty good job of off-loading Fiestas to be honest. Seems like more and more people are running them. Andreas is a very savvy businessman
Both sons are now racing and doing well. |

Since it is IMG running the speedway, it wasn't a copy. It was a blueprint of a success. It was also in the proposal that the FIA won over to hand over the keys of the ERC to IMG. And in all the original press releases up until very near the first season they actually ran. It was in all the paperwork they used to win over the clubs and tracks. Not just 'an idea'. It was THE road to go.

Of course it was a copy, doesn't matter if IMG ran it already. Their original plan with 16 cars, five heats and everybody meeting each other once was scrapped fortunately.
The rise of rallycross isn't down to IMG's system either, it is down to their promotion. Just because they made it more like speedway didn't translate into its success, their promotion meant success. And what do you mean with "win over the clubs and tracks"? |

Well, the clubs and or tracks were invited to pay very very large amounts of money (relative to what they are/were able to make in a year) and give up a large portion of their freedom to join the WRX by IMG in order to step into the 'big unknown'. So they had to be won over, övertala in Swedish

They do
But it is the tracks chouce. A lot of them like Valkenswaard, Poland, Czecho and Belgium, Hjungary KNEW they could never make the maths work with the insane prices. So juts left ther series. What they are doing is literally selling their dates for money to anyone that will buy them. That's why they went to pointless places like Turkey, Argentina, Canada. Partly so they can qualify for being a world championship, and partly as they were the only people that wanted to pay. It is the same precedent that is used in F1 and goes all the way down to speedway, WTCC< Superbike. It's garbage, but it is the tracks chocie, and thankfully our old tracks did not take the risk, or they would have been put out of business. Lydden possibly could be too, but they paid initially |

Real shame that Mattias won't be racing. As much as I want to see races settled through outright pace and not mechanical issues, a part of me hopes that Johan has a bad weekend in order to keep the Championship points close.
With no Ekstrom though, what are the odds of a PSRXVW 1-2? |

The Polos certainly have the speed to do it. Can't help but think Hooligan is in desperation mode. I'm sure Bakkerud will make himself known by going for invisible gaps so you never know.

Is there a particular reason why the Polos seems so fast? And also so fast out of the box? Is it its chassis? It's engine? And is there already more info on those cars? The previous Polos (both Marklund and Kristofferson) had Trollspeed engines

https://www.kimberleymediagroup.com/...-issue-rt-199/ I haven't got the article to hand, but if I recall correctly the engine is built by VW Motorsport and is the same engine that is used in the Beetle in the GRC. VW Motorsport obviously know the chassis and it seems like quite a bit of tech from the WRCars (old and new) has gone into the Polo rallycross car. That said, I still think its a very impressive debut from the team. What struck me as a little concerning is that the tone of the engineer interviewed in the Race Tech feature implied that they haven't been able to go all out on the design of the current car. Perhaps that was just the way I read the comment(s) but, if that is the case, it makes you wonder how much faster the car could be. |

That's correct, I have read the same, also on the restrictions due to being an ex WRC car. I really doubt it is a real VW designed engine as all the WRC tuners use external sources.

VW got an extreme know-how compared to other teams though and big budgets. Their success in WRC makes it clear for me why they are so good at the moment in rallycross.

This is as close to a factory car as you are likely to get in rallycross. The Fords are not using the same care, engine. But likely similar tech in suspensions and the like, plus lots of older tech from the old Focus WRC.
You have an entire team of redundant WRC guys looking at these cars, using all the parts, R&D stuff they looked at, and putting it into these cars. It is like the old GpB cars, with only one manufacturer pulling out, VW. So all their tech goes into these two cars. Its no surprise they are making everyone look silly. And pushing budgets up enormously as a result. Nice work IMG, cap it you idiots before it turns into WEC, ITC, DTM, WSPC. |
