rx-guru should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Pikes Peak – Race To The Clouds

Did anyone notice that Nobuhiro "Monster" Tajima with his 1007bhp (at sea level) mid-engined Suzuki Sport XL7 TwinTurbo Hill Climb Special broke the 13 years old unlimited record of Rod Millen on July 21 by about 3 Seconds? The new record is 10:01:408 Minutes now, less than one and a half Seconds above the "sound barrier"… By the way, Per Eklund’s year 2000 record time of 11:21:58 Minutes with his Saab 9-3 Viggen T16 4x4 for the 'Pikes Peak Open category' is still unbroken.

Rallycross drivers who did The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC) at least once:
Martin Schanche, the first ever (and still only?) competitor who made it to the summit on three wheels…!
Olle Arnesson
Matti Alamäki
Thor Holm
Stig Blomqvist
Per Eklund
Tore H. Bratlie
Anyone missing?

I went one time 2 years ago. Probably wont be back anytime soon, but it was good to see once. The lesson I learned was DO NOT DRINK COCA COLA AT 12,000 FEET!!!!

I saw the story in MN this week - I hadn't realised that it was that time of year "Monster" has been trying to break that record for some time now and good on him for finally doing it - the machinery he's used in the process is nothing short of incredible. Having said that I still prefer the mach2 RS200 that Stig drove

Wasn't Pat Doran interested in doing it a couple of years ago in the RS200, not sure whether he went in the end or not...!

Pretty pointless record as Pikes Peak is now almost fully tarmac, while it was still fully dirt in Rod Millens time. The paving of the track really takes the shine away from the event.

Almost fully and fully…? AFAIK that part of the hill road they use for the race has some more tarmac now. And in the early 1990s it was also not pure gravel.

"I dont think you guys have any idea what it takes to shave even a second off a race like this. WRC guys drive hundreds of miles in an event and will still finish within fractions of a second from eachother. Tajima is awesome, and he deserves a lot of respect with this victory. The track was super slippy because of the recent rains and cars pulling up rocks that had the other drivers saying "it was like driving on marbles on top of ice". I can actually point myself out in the video posted above, and I gotta say that the sheer speed he took going up the mountain was incredible. Even with the new pavement on devils playground he still took the turn to its fullest. I look forward to him breaking the 10min barrier next year, and dont look forward to having the hill paved more. Also, those thinking the pavement helped need only to have been there in years before. The track is a TON more narrow and twisty, and many of the cars were noticably slower through some turns because of them being nearly half the size as before. So give the man some respect, and remember that the suzuki sticker doesnt mean anything. Its an unlimited class car, and hes called monster for a reason!"

It's still an awesome challenge for both man and machine, 'Monster' has put in a lot of time end effort to achieve the results he's now getting. Also don't forget that when Rod Millen set his time the loose had been treated (can't remember exactly what it was with) and the surface was a lot different to subsequent years (the environmental impact of the surface treatment was deemed to great to repeat).

If a 2nd class driver (Rod Millen) breakes the record(s) of two 1st class drivers (Walter Röhrl and Ari Vatanen) by non less than 40 Seconds the track must have been in absolut perfect conditions in that year 1994.

I still regret not gone with Martin Schanche in 1984 due to overbooked good value flights to the USA coz of the LA Olympics. After 1/3 of the track privateer "Mister Rallycross" and his Xtrac XR3 was measured 11 Seconds faster than Mouton/Pons in the factory Audi quattro. Just a little later he suffered a flat right hand front tyre. Martin pressed on regardless and did the other 2/3 of the way to the summit on three wheels and one rim and the Yanks went all completely nuts…

Stig Blomqvist did a large portion of one of his runs 'up the hill' in the RS200 with no brakes

Per Eklund once in the Viggen also. And the late Thor Holm in 1991 fell of the side of the mountain during practice with his RS200. It got stuck on a ledge, otherwise the fall would have been about 100 Metres…

This is what is quoted in the presention box of a model of Walter Rohrls Audi Sport Quattro S1 from the 1987 event

Pikes Peak Auto Hillclimb is one of the oldest, hairiest auto races worldwide. 12.42 miles, covering 5000 ft of terrain, some 156 turns and awesome guardrail-less sheer cliffs provide a real challenge. In 1987, no less than 10 European Group B rally cars, some even radically modified beyond Group B form, appeared at Pikes Peak in Colorado for the 65th "Race to the Clouds" On race day the prime topic was if Bobby Unser's 1986 record of 11 minutes 9.22 would last out the afternoon?
When the dust had settled, victory belonged to Walter Rohrl.
He had obliterated Unser's record by 21.37 seconds, finishing in 10.47.85, beating runner up Vatanen by 7 seconds

And Walter "Small Tube" [engl. for Röhrl ] still holds the overall track record for cars with front-engine. His successors, Ari Vatanen, Rod Millen and "Monster" Tajima, all drove mid-engined beasts.
