Here`s what you need--

http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~fulton...ip_winners.htm

5L V8 class started in 1993
1985-1992 were International Group A rules
?-1984 were 'homegrown' Group C rules

Just to clarify for you Brits, Group C isn't what you think it is. Australian Group C, which ran from 1973-1984 is for Production Tiuring Cars, somewhat like your old Group 1 & Group 2 rules.

Much more like Group 2, but with a hotch-potch of strange inclusions, like allowing a specified guard flare and spoiler kit developed by the car owners...

David, there were five-litre V8s in Touring Car racing in Australia right from the beginning... or at least from 1957 or so. Len Lukey and Norm Beechey were among those who raced Ford Customlines in the late fifties, the early sixties saw a number of Studebaker Larks (Bert Needham, Warren Weldon among them), the first Mustangs of course... but from about 1967 virtually all V8s were over five litres until reined in later on.

I can believe that there were Studebakers competeting, they are some of the toughest engines and cars made. The engines came from the factory with a Very high nickel content block, and forged steel crank and rods. The steering system uses king bolts and the basic V8 cars had 10 inch front and 11 inch rear brakes, Dana 44 rearends, and some with traction bars. The Avanti was the first American production car fitted with front disc brakes. They're still winning races.

I have a Studebaker racing history web site. I collect any/all, pictures/information about Studebakers in racinng, and would appreciate it if anyone can help me collect it. Thanks in advance!

The Studebakers raced locally were victims of the big end bearings failing pretty regularly. The crank pins could have been machined to allow a bigger bearing, which would have fixed the problem, but the rules didn't allow that.

Nobody ever raced one of the later Studebakers with the Chevvy engine, sadly.

Actually mick, I did get in front of it and saw the whole accident in my rear view mirror. The Lotus Cortina that got hit by the Studebaker wasn't too bad. The GT Cortina that got destroyed was t-boned by a Jag, it was well shortened in front.

Some more complete version of the results, in an admittedly poorly laid out and dated format (its very old by net standards)

Do not believe we Aussies have always run the small V8s - the likes of a Brit Sir Gwaine Bailey punted a 7 litre Ford Galaxie out here as did some luminaries like Norm Beechey, Len Lukey & Lex Davison. Bob Jane roadraced the only ZL1 Camaro (1969) anywhere in the world with 7 litres of Chev muscle to the 71 Touring Car Championship. In 72 Aus knobbled the 7 litre monster cutting the limit to 6 litres forcing the Jane team to use a 350 - the 7 litre & gearbox went to the UK for Frank Gardner to put into his Camaro & win yet another Brit Touring title.

Yep...the Jag was really sad...almost right back to the windscreen Drivers Left. They were both fairly hard hits.....I think the difference was that one was hit by the Jag at high speed and tuther a little slower as Stude was braking and further up the track.......

BTW do you remember seeing Ian Stewart at the meeting, white Torana Number 14....my sanity is being questioned by two friends (one a Mini Racer who should know better!!) who say he could not possibly have been at EC after engine problems at Wakefield the week before
