But fundamentally its protectionism which doesn't lead to effective competition by the local manufacturers.

R&D tax breaks and so on go some way towards matching what some of the overseas manufacturers get so I guess that's the argument for it.

Anyway the Govt is popping up industries ALL over not just cars.
