X-wings were first introduced in 1997 by Tyrrell, but as the cars were slow anyway, nobody took much notice of them, in 1998, other teams started using them, including Jordan, Prost and Ferrari. They were banned under asthetic and safety reasons. (Jean Alesi's right X-wing was pulled off by an air line of another team as he exitted the pits during San marino 1998)

Bernie described them as ugly, Max described them as unsafe and therefore they were never seen again after san marino 1998. Which was nice.

No, refuelling is far too brilliant to ban. And narrow track cars just look fabulous and are soooo conducive to good racing.

i don't mind the cars being narrow, it's those stupid grooved tyres that i don't like.
jordan probably had the most asthetically pleasing x wing, and even that was dog ugly. |

I thoght the x-wings were deadly looking. I have a model of damon hills 198 and a rschu 198 without them and hills is much more better looking.

One of the very rare good things max has done
I never liked the narrow cars and positively LOTHE the circumferal grooved tyres (and of course still do) Oddly after being narrow track for awhile i relized how stupid the wide track cars looked!! The present width is about perfect |

As for the X-wings the (1997) Tyrell-Ford 025 had X-wings.

What about the mooted "TIE Fighter" design, used by Ferrari aka the Evil Galactic Empire?
Oh c'mon, SOMEONE had to say it! |

It's no surprise they were banned really... I'd kind of forgotten about them, but they do look absolutely ridiculous!

They were something of an ugly addition, I can't say I missed them when they were gone!

haha i had forgotten about those too, no wonder they got caught on air-lines. The cars could be like fighter jets stopping on aircraft carriers! Big string across the pit bay and hey presto! No need for brakes!

how much did they reallly do? they are good for a laugh, it really looked like an aerodynamic bandaid- what's the problem these things were covering up?
and those Jordans looked great buzzin hornets |

I remember Ferrari tried to 'borrow' some from Sauber, but they didn't fit the car, and were promptly banned anyway. The furore surrounding x wings was kind of hidden by the other teams trying to ban that extra brake pedal Mclaren had fitted!

mclaren never bothered with them anyway did they. i don't recall reading any stories at the time that they were even considering them. good thing too, i thought that 98 mclaren was a very graceful looking car.
