talking of banger racing, when was the last time anyone saw an Austin Cambridge?
to Add to Morning Gents geometry, Accralite have for a long time listed 82 and 83mm flat top pistons for MGB blocks also . . . they also are almost a direct replacement for Ford precrossflow flat tops, therefore if you used 85mm (1650cc Ford) or even 86mm BDA etc pistons and long rods in a special linered block . . . . oh, we've done that one, the 6 hour engine! |

Yer right there Peter, I turned up for a double doctors appointment this morning at 7.20am only to find out I was 24 hours late and this is not the first time, I did it a couple of months ago and turned up a week early! The receptionist was not amused.
My banger racing mate who I mentioned earlier, the Cambridge was his favorite mount, those things were so strong as I said by nimble driving and virtue of the strength of the car he used to make one last race after race. |

Belive it or not,This morning in Ely! The LC pistons always used to be the favorite for big Bs,at the time they were the only alternative. |

[QUOTE=Peter Mallett;2524831]I lived within spitting daistance of the track, used to go there most Thursdays.
I only remember aldershot from late 89 to 21/11/92 when it closed. Me and my sister used to play under the little hut of a grandstand. haha. I wasnt aloud to go to the last meeting but i have the video. My brother wanted to build the cr as a classic stock car but that would be a waste of a car i think. Wouldnt be so bad if the car was a rot box but its too good to get smashed up. |

Martin (ask Iain about this), one of the biggest problems you'll have with a racing MG Magnette, is exactly the problem Iain has when he's towing the A105 Westminster.
Whenever, and wherever you stop, somebody in their late fifties or sixties will come up to you and tell you how their uncle used to take them (and their sister) to Hayling Island in one "just like that!" every year. Simply add 30 minutes to your journey time for every stop... Actually, one of the more interesting encounters of that nature was at Donington last year. I was removing the rear antiroll bar off the Westie, because the race looked like being wet, when an elderly gentleman came up and said "Removing the antiroll bar eh? I used to do that in these sort of conditions. Mind you, our tyres were a bit narrower in those days" It turned out that he was a development engineer, and used to race a 105 in period, against the likes of Jack Sears etc. Anyway, Martin (like his late dad) has completed many projects already, so expect to see the Magnette out before too long. |

I get a bit of that with the old heavy chevy, everyone seems to know someone or other that had one but its good and I like to run a car that attracts a bit of interest. And I should be in bed not just got in from the pub as I have to be on me way to brands in 5 and half hours!

Iv had many people stop me in petrol stations saying thay used to have a mk1 escort like mine back in the day but not as bad as driving dads 100E. For a start is is yellower than the yellowest bannana in the world (maby, iv never seen the yellowest bannana in the world but i woild gess its quite yellow) and its vary shiny.
I should own normal cars that dont get noticed but thats just not me. I once got stoped by police in my old customised mk2 cortina 1500 delux just so thay could ask what it was and have a look at it!!!!!!! |

I think mk1mart needs to know the Magnette is entirely unlike the "B" or even the "A" to which it was actually contemporary. The only real similarities are the engine, gearbox (although a different case) and the rear axle.
MGB stuff will not fit, although you can *make* the rear axle, engine and transmission fit. The front suspension is compeltely different and the only car that can offer disc brakes is the late MGA "deluxe" or the twin-cam without massive modification... even then you need special adaptors for the calipers (a Mr. Green makes them). I'd love to see a Magnette "lovingly" raced but you really should know what you are looking at first! |

Has it still got the original front shockers fitted? The term 'Hens Teeth' might sound familiar.

Shockers off and drained, moving the shocker arms through their FULL movement.10/60 full synthetic engine oil filled back to thtop but moving the lever again through its full arc, leave the filler plug out overnight, hey presto, they will last at least a season without being touched, even if you do pretend to be a BTCC driver and insist on using the kerbing!
Psst, dont spread this around, dont want everyone knowing. |

Slightly off topic, but I recently did end up buying a 1955 Magnette ZA (thanks to Mr. Bower's assistance!). According to the engine number, it's a 1498cc but probably not original, judging by the prefix it should have been originally from an Austin/Morris/Wolesley, set up in single-carb with "high" compression (according to a list of BMC engine codes I dug up online). Would this then mean that in it's current twin-carb setup that it should have the output of the later 1498 fitted to the ZB's, Varitones and I think early MGAs? Power went up from 60 to 68hp when MG changed the compression ratios in '56. Also, the car's DVLA log book lists the capacity at 1552cc, is this simply a typo or is there a possibility that it is indeed this capacity? I have been reading up on the B-series engines and have not come across this figure, only 1200, 1498, 1622, 1798cc, and up.
