Well in terms of looks, the Reynard wasn't exactly top of the list before it was converted to a hybrid. But performance dictates looks, so we shall see what the new generation of P1 cars look like. The hybrids will be one phase, but a ground up car from Audi (or whoever) will definitely be a good indicator.

Ok, the Nasamax wasn't going to win too many beauty contests (but, then again, nor would the R8 in my eyes), but I'd hardly call it an ugly duckling.......

With the banning of the Maserati MC12 from LM and FIA GT, it seems the ACO/FIA have once and for all stated their intent to keep the LMPs at the head of the field, with the GTS cars behind.

Also Creation Sport have said on their website forum that they believe the ACO will continue with the current regs into 2005, with no restrictions for the older LMPs.

From 2006 the ACO will then push ahead with the new regs with a plan for long term stability of the rules.

If the MC12 had been designed to complie with the rules in the first place, then it would not have been banned.

I suspect we will see it at some point regardless.
BTW an Audi R8 would still be quicker anyway.

The homologation regs state that a GTS cars has to be a road car first, then modified to race. Maserati modified an existing road car, the Enzo, for racing, and re-homologated it as a 'road car'.

Its like Nissan homologating its JGTC Skyline as a road car, then entering it into FIA GT.

If the MC12 is just a racing version of the Enzo, then what's the problem? They just have to be convinced to enter it as a Ferrari Enzo and not a Maserati. If the money were available, I'd like to see all GT's at the level of the MC12.

Also, it's easy to forget that it is racing modification that makes competition among different makes equitable. A race-modified McLaren isn't as much faster than the stock version as a C5-R is faster than a road Corvette....a certain amount of modification is necessary to put Corvettes, 550's, Saleens, Vipers etc on the track together.

But Maserati built a race car first, with inherent benefits for racing, such as the long tail etc. then homologated it for the road.


If they had taken the Enzo and modified it for racing, with the limited N-GT types mods allowed for 'Supercars', it would have been very quick, but would not have had the long tail and purpose designed bodywork that give the MC12 such a potential performance advantage.

A C6-R or DB9 have a much better chance of being competitive against a race modified Enzo than an MC12.

We don't want to get to the point were a genuine modified road car like a DB9 or 575 cannot be competitive in GTS.
