Pole Position
I'm going to start this is this forum - I'm not that sure where it belongs as it's more general motorsport.
Why is pole position called 'pole'? I've always wondered, and never got round to asking. Thanks for any help! |

I think it has something to do with the scoring tower being on that side, at least thats what I have always thought

I always thought "pole position" was a term used at Indianapolis, because you started the race on the side that the scoring pole was/is. It was simply adopted for other tracks.

I thought it came from horse racing (as many terms did) where the fastest horse, always passes the finishing pole first, in the fastest time. They just happened to apply it to qualifying

Yes...
More specifically, I think there are "Poles" every 1/8 mile, including the Finish Line.
