I'm not sure if it was licensed from Ford, or their own design though.

Hmm, I remember it in use in the 80's/early 90's. In fact Ford made a big play of it in their ad for the Fiesta with Stuart Piearce. But I see on YouTube that it made its debut on the Ford Scorpio and still retains the patent.

The patent for one type of heated screen (ford's version) expired in 2011.

Other manufacturers have employed heated screens through the years.
Bentley and Rolls Royce in the 60s. Land Rover from around 1990.

Ford's version was one of the most effective though, and others seem to have avoided it due to the current requirements.

Yup that stacks up with what I just read. The rolls and Bentley versions used gold as the element. Apparently some insurance companies are reluctant to insure due to the replacement cost.

Just had an email / ‘blog’ from DVLA regarding driving in Europe after brexit.

Guess what, the term ‘you may find’ and ‘if the UK leaves without a deal’ are scattered all the way through. So absolutely nothing different to months ago!

Quelle surprise.
I suspect the EU feel the same about Mrs Mays' visit - they'd forgotten to put the bunting up when I passed earlier!

You have to love the value of some of the deals done already, one is Palestine with a total trade between the two countries of £25m, that's probably less than the House of Commons bar bill for six months.

On the subject of import tariffs around the world, nothing to do with brexit, but....

Apparently the USA has levied a 25% import tax on imported light trucks and vans for decades (according to Truck Trend Mag), called the ‘Chicken Tax’, which has it’s foundations in a global dispute over the import and export of poultry. To avoid the tax on Europe built Sprinters exported to the States, since 2006 Merc has been dismantling the newly built vans, shipping them in bits, then reassembling them in South Carolina......

Sounds a ridiculous waste of money, but presumably it was cheaper than paying the tariff. Anyway, the 2019 Sprinter is now built from scratch in the S. Carolina factory, so common sense wins.

Was’t there a period when cars were exported to other parts of the World from the UK in ‘CKD’ form? Was that to save on freight cost or to avoid tariffs?

Cant really answer your question Mike but I can tell you about the time your cars were sent abroad complete and were in bits few miles later

It's what the Japanese did in the 80s to get round high UK import taxes that had been levied in the 70s only they were put together in Cowley and called the cars Austin Montegos instead of Honda Preludes

No firm info here Peter - but would expect it to be a document signed by both parties along the lines of a Letter of intent?

The Austin Montego was not a Honda Prelude. The Prelude was much better.

Triumph Acclaim was Honda Ballade as was early Rover 216 etc. Later were Honda Concerto based, I think. Prelude was the big 2dr coupe.....

From memory Maestro and Montego owed nothing to Honda, but used VW Golf gearbox with pretty rubbish British engine! Think the suspension layout was pretty much copied from a Golf as well.....

Whatever, they all looked alike to me and they were still Jap cars with BL badges on, I used to deliver them to Cowley in 40 foot containers and watch them being built while the truck was unloaded.

I seem to remember that the Hillman Hunter was exported in CKD form to Iran Khodro for re-assembly there.

The Hunter was rather popular in Iran.

A pal of mine went to work there shortly before the Shah was toppled and bought a locally built Hunter. For regular trips to local skiing apparently.

From what I recall he was on the second evacuation flight (of 3) when the Ayatollahs took over. Obviously had to leave the car behind ...

Years ago wasn't the Acuras partially made in US complete power plants coming from Japan? Same with motorbikes made in Italy or Spain. I've not checked but think FIAT was a kind of forerunner post war.

The Maestro and Montego weren't Japanese influenced in any way.

And yes that's the rationale behind the Lotus 7 in just form. IIRC the actual build you had to do was negligible.
