Yup, looked like it was just outside the track from the NBC stills. Before Newgarden was off track the cameras were done.

Looks like Indy is restoring his time as they closed the track. He would have been first out of it reopened but it did not.

Fast 12 looks interesting, 2 rookies in Grosjean and JJ. Veekay at the top last I saw and AMSP have figured things out for O'Ward

mstets should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
I wasn't aware until today that points are being awarded to the top 12 qualifiers. One point for P12 and 12 points for P1.

I am kind of surprised that Newgarden was given his qualifying spot back after withdrawing it. Why was his time reinstated while Karam's was not? Seems that both were prevented from a 2nd attempt by the weather.

Karam went out and completed all 4 laps on his run, Newgarden was on track when they waved the yellow.

I should have stated the question better. I wondered if Karam's time would have been reinstated if the day had ended with the first yellow for rain. When Peacock coverage ended it sounded like he would be starting in the last row if he didn't qualify again on Saturday. That is what I would have expected, so was surprised that Newgarden got his run back. I don't recall a situation like this in the past but I always assumed that once a run was withdrawn there was no way to reclaim it no matter what the circumstances. I wasn't aware that another attempt was guaranteed if you withdrew your current time. What if time had run out before Josef got on track? Seems to me that a withdrawn run's status should not change due to subsequent happenings.

It appears that since no one could actually get bumped out the times were withdrawn only when you entered the track. If you were in lane 1 you lost your time when you took to the track as opposed to the old time lost when you entered Lane 1 but if you were up you still had to go within the 1 min window of the previous run. If you waved off your run, you would have been like Wilson and have no time but still in the field. I think the only advantage to lane 2 this year was you could keep your time if you waved off but you had to wait.

Last year ran similar time only withdrawn when you entered "rule," the "official" stats said no one actually withdrew their time but multiple cars ran from Lane 1 so.....?

Think Newgarden was returned to front of the Lane 1 queue so time was returned as if his run hadn't started. So yeah, so that clear as mud from what the old rules were?

Dixon takes back to back Poles and his 5th overall at the 500. It was the second fastest in the history of the race.

Fastest ever for pole, Arie ran the only faster time on Day 2. It wasn't for pole. And yes, Indy is making a huge deal about it being fastest ever pole speeds and fastest front row ever.

234.046 for Dixie over Brayton's 233.718 in 96. Pole won after withdrawing lap time that made the field just to get up front if I remember. Unfortunately he couldn't make the start and Smoke inherited it

237.498 for Luyendyk in 97 is still fastest single lap, likely to stand even with the new engines. But could be close.

I stand corrected, it is indeed Dixie with the fastest Pole ever. That is the last time I will ever get any stats from the NBC commentary team without corroborating them.

Arie Luyendyk's fastest single lap record was set in '96, as was the 4 lap average record: 2:31.908, 236.986 mph (381.392 kmh).

It was great fun with that yesterday, NBC posted and corrected it at least 3 times. Only reason I remembered was actually watching the race and being old enough to remember the impact of losing a driver in practice.

Great MP article on an interesting car from Indy of old. Always torn about whether these made Indy more or less good professional racing, or just interesting.

Blimey! The air got under it, which is what the slots at the front of the car's floor are supposed to prevent. Then again, it was an unusual angle.

Same thoughts I had, really odd that the car got airborne after that impact. Glad he was ok, and impressive job by safety team. They were pulling up while the car was still moving. They got the car flipped back over in no time.

mstets should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
An interesting day, sorry to see two potential contenders with major damage to their cars. Colton said his car was loose from the start of the session but didn't sound like they had made any changes to tighten it.

The Santino/Malukas incident looked to be pretty much equal on responsibility though Santino fully accepted it. I am wondering if Malukas got a clear call prematurely from his spotter. He clearly moved up the track before he was completely clear of Santino.

Rinus only did 18 laps and was last on the lap time chart - was out of the car well before the end of the session and sounded very happy with the car and very confident.

Much like how the roof flaps in NASCAR won't help in some situations where external forces are involved, I reckon the combination of the right left rear collapsing from the initial hit together with the right front wheel rubbing against the wall and helping the nose climb even faster made the car pretty much impossible to stop from flipping.

If the car had bounced off the wall faster, so that the rear had started swinging out to the left immediately, the car most likely wouldn't have flipped.

I'm no expert of course, but that's my theory and I'm sticking to it

All in all I'm just happy it was a pretty 'soft' - relatively speaking - crash.

One thing i dont understand is that the commentators keep saying how the teams work on their Indy 500 cars all year and that its a disaster to crash the race car but all the parts are spec right? Like you get what Dallara give you? There should be no difference between parts, right?
