BTCC etc - Silverstone 1987 / 88

Seen some very interesting threads regarding the older BTCC meetings which prompted me to get out my old slide collection which I'm currently converting to digital. So the attached link to a library of 20 'slides' may be of interest.

I took them at Silverstone in (I think) 1987 and 1988 and believe that at least some of them were taken at one of the British GP meetings in those years (separate F1 slides pending). I thought that the attached slides were all BTCC but looking at them again a lot of them appear to be some sort of other saloon car races. I've labelled a few of the BTCC entries using the excellent contributions from Jesper OH and others. If anybody can help me out with the others or correct what I've labelled so far please let me know.

In terms of quality - not good, they are simple copies which I haven't yet had chance to improve but they should give a general indication. I hope they are of use / interest to someone. Others to follow from these meetings will be F1, a few historics and some 'odds and sods'.

Hi Gary, thanks for posting these pictures.
Of the ones without captions I'd suggest:
Picture No 5: I think the driver looks like Win Percy not Andy Rouse. (Win often substituted for Andy when he had clashing WTCC races, and I'm sure the 1987 GP support race was one of these occasions).
Picture No 7: Dave Brodie in his Mitsubishi Starion.
Picture No 9: Guy Edwards (It actually says so on the front wing!)
Picture No 10: John Llellyn Corrola (again, his name is on the door!).
Pictures 11 & 19: Chris Hodgetts in the Brooklyn RS500.
Pictures 14, 15 & 16: Tom Walkinshaw in the TWR Herbie Clips Commodore.
Picture No 17: Mike Smith in the M3?

Good shots there Gary.

I think the pic of the Kaliber Sierra was taken at the '88 TT because it looks like Jonathan Palmer's helmet in car (he shared it with regular BTCC driver Guy Edwards who's name VIVA rightly says is on the side of the bonnet/wing area)

The Texaco, Redkote (Dick Johnson) Sierra's, Herbie Clips Holden were also from the TT, along with the Mobil M3.

Also a nice shot of the Maserati there I see.

Amended years

Thanks for the prompt help so far.

Having just started on the F1 photos I realize that I got the dates wrong and the photos might be from 1989 as well (or instead of 1988). I noticed that I have a slide of Nigel Mansell driving a Ferrari which he didn't join until 1989 I believe.

Hi Gary- those are brilliant pics, thanks for sharing them- you can show us as many of those as you like

It looks like Win to me as well- he was definitely in the car at the 1987 British GP meeting

Picture No 7: Dave Brodie in his Mitsubishi Starion.
1987 British GP meeting again I reckon? The Atari/SMC Estate sponsorship was a one-off for this meeting I think

Picture No 9: Guy Edwards (It actually says so on the front wing!)
As Chunterer suggests, looks like Jonathan Palmer in the car. The race number 39 fits for the '88 TT, so definitely Edwards & Palmer

Picture No 10: John Llellyn Corrola (again, his name is on the door!).
'88 TT again- Llewellyn and Alex Moss in the MIL Motorsport Corolla

Pictures 11 & 19: Chris Hodgetts in the Brooklyn RS500.
11 & 19 is the Dick Johnson car at the '88 TT. The Brooklyn car was on the entry list but a no-show- Chris raced one of his Corollas instead. I think it looks like Johnson in the car rather than John Bowe?

Pictures 14, 15 & 16: Tom Walkinshaw in the TWR Herbie Clips Commodore. Definitely looks like Tom in the car in all three pics

Picture No 17: Mike Smith in the M3?

The Texaco, Redkote (Dick Johnson) Sierra's, Herbie Clips Holden were also from the TT, along with the Mobil M3. Yep, all 1988 TT again.
No 88 Mobil M3 was entered as Sytner/Hoy/Smith- can't remember who actually raced the car, as I think the lineup got switched around a little from what was in the programme?

Also a nice shot of the Maserati there I see.
Texaco Sierras according to the '88 TT entry list-
Pics 12&13 (Race no1) Klaus Ludwig/Klaus Niedzwiedz
Pic 20 (Race no3) Gianfranco Brancatelli/Bernd Schneider

Pic 1, the Sytner M3 is a good one- it's another 1987 British GP support race pic, the giveaway is the Sytner BMW/Chartered Trust sponsorship, seen in Frank's first few M3 outings in '87, before Mobil 1/BMW Finance took over from 1988 onwards- you don't see many pics of Sytner in an M3 in those colours, they were only seen in about half-a-dozen races, compared with about four seasons for the later Mobil colours, as seen in the '88 Silverstone TT pic later

Some nice rare pearls among your pictures, gary396. Especially like the Tom Walkinshaw Holden pictures, showing how outlandish the car looked in it's evolution dress, but also the #156 Corolla, as I haven't seen pictures of that before.

Pictures 1-8 are likely from the 1987 Silverstone British Grand Prix support race, while the remaining pictures 9-12 are all from the 1988 Fina Tourist Trophy at the same track.

P1: #33 Frank Sytner
P2: #7 Mike O'Brien
P3: #7 Mike O'Brien (same picture as P2!?)
P4: #66 Chris Hodgetts, eventual 1987 champion
P5: #1 Win Percy in the Andy Rouse car
P6: #8 Tim Harvey, John Maguire Racing, Rover Vitesse
P7: #9 Dave Brodie
P8: #8 Tim Harvey

1988 TT
P9: #39 Guy Edwards/Jonathan Palmer
P10: #156 John Llewellyn/Alex Moss
P11: #41 Dick Johnson/John Bowe, definitely Johnson driving, Bowe having a full face helmet.
P12: #1 Eggenberger
P13: #1 Eggenberger
P14: #46 Tom Walkinshaw/Jeff Allam
P15: #46 Tom Walkinshaw/Jeff Allam + the back of the TOM'S GB Corolla of Phil Dowsett.
P16: #46 Tom Walkinshaw/Jeff Allam
P17: #88
P18: #12 Thomas Lindström/
P19: #41 Dick Johnson/John Bowe
P20: #3 Eggenberger

For further exploration, look at these two links regarding the 1988 TT:

Thanks once again to everyone for their help in identifying the cars / drivers. I'll update the photo labels and re-publish them in the next day or so. Will also add the F1 pictures plus a few others from the 1987-89 meetings.
