My sense is that they registered the names to keep someone else from taking them... Its not uncommon for Companies to register alternates of their names in order to prevent mischief.

Yep, but it seems to me that if they had no intention to go into F1 they did'nt need these domainnames........

Audi are part of the VW group who also own Seat and Porche.
But I can't see them entering F1 next year, maybe 2003. Incidentially I doubt if Audi would market themselves around F1, their cars have Quattro (4-wheel drive) surely the WRC would be a more viable option? |

Yep, EERO is correct. Companies all ways register domains to avoid them being taken by some one else. For example, George Bush has registered GeorgeBushSucks.com and almost 200 hundred other domains, simply to stop other people from getting them.

I hope they enter F1. It would be great to have another manufacturer.
Audi has looked into it and said that they want to win LeMans first. Well after 2 years in a row of success, hopefully they'll step up to F1. |

No one but Audi and/or Porsche could have any reasonable interest in those domainnames. Even if they didn't claim them today and somebody else would, they could claim em later anyway, the other parties interest would definatly be outweighed by the interest of either Porsche and/or Audi.

Apart from Skoda, Audi and GM are the only big names missing from F1. I suppose if the other manufacturers start to get some financial mileage out of F1, the temptation to joint the fray would be extreme for the two.

F1 will be at its strongest when all major manufacturers are taking part. I'd love to see every team with a works engine. Here's what I'd love to see:
Ferrari McLaren-Mercedes Williams BMW Jordan Porsche / Audi Honda (BAR bought out) Renault Jaguar Toyota General Motors Sauber Arrows Hyundai / Lotus / Mazda / Mitsubishi / Rover / Subaru Prost Peugeot (we can dream) Minardi Lamborghini I couldn't think of an engine for Arrows. I'm sure VW own Porche, Skoda, Seat and Audi.
Cus Audi use the chassis from the Golf, for its A3 model. |

I knew I was going to stuff a couple of them up, with so many different companies being owned by others. Oh well.

The prospect of Rover building works F1 engines sounds as ridiculous as Nigeria investing in a satellite programme, looking at the current state of the company.

I think Honda, Toyota and Misubishi is more than enough for Japan. My Subaru is a great little car, but definitely underpowered. I am thinking of the rally based model for my next.
This question of the ownership of Porsche keeps coming up. I was under the impression that the VWG included Porsche since some years back, but now I'm not so sure. I can find nothing on the internet that indicates they are affiliated. Can any of our Euro members research this and come up with a definitive answer? |

I wasn't serious about any of my thoughts. It's just a little fantasy of mine. Though not one of the more exciting ones.

I don't know if Porsche are owned by VW, but they definitely have a strong relationship. From what I've read, the upcoming Porsche Cayenne 4WD is going to have quite a bit in common with a future VW 4WD (ie. the platform).
