I don't know why "most passes in one lap" should be importand or relevant anyway. Albeit some strange occurances (like what happened to Mika at Magny Cours in 99, mentioned in this thread, or more often after those stupid rule changes recently) the guys who do well are at front anyway, thus only a couple cars to pass, if any at all. If you're looking for "most passes in one lap" records you're also looking at "he botched first otherwise he wouldn't need to do that in the first place".

An overtake is an overtake, one of the best cars or not. You could also say Wilson had a lot less to lose on his startline charges. Nothing to lose in fact. Doesn't make it any less impressive though does it? |

Obviously this brought up some good old runs, but I think jnr blue 91 might have it right that Winkelhock has it for one lap. Anyone disagree?

Haha- just remembered- the 2005 Indianapolis GP. Six drivers started, so does that mean Monteiro, Karthikeyan, Albers and Friesacher were meant to have made up 16-20 places each by the end of the first classified lap? I know they didn't pass anyone, this is just a bit trivial, but surely the 16 other drivers were still classified as runners for the first 6/7 laps until they were deemed as out. So that means the back 4 did indeed 'officially' make up at least 16 places each?!

Indy 2005,where the Jordan's and Minardi's qualified at the back of the field and then suddenly found themselves in third, fourth, fifth and sixth.

Plus I think some drivers were of the mindset when racing against Montoya that he was pretty peerless in a straight battle anway so why resist. They'd lose out eventually so better make the 'pain' a bit less and just get on with their own race!!
He certainly liked to exploit that. |

It's good fun to talk about and remember some of these amazing moments in racing, but really, when a front running car starts at the rear, it's almost a given that they'd overtake a fair share of cars by the end of the first lap.
But somehow, as they climb up the pack and race cars of more equal quality, the overtakings just slow down |

Yes, well basic rule of overtaking is that you do need to be quicker than the guy in front to get past. Crazy I know.

But, but, but, but...standardised chassis are meant to be the answer to producing lots of overtaking? F3000, in its later years especially, showed this to be totally true.
The best way to enhance overtaking is to have rampant team-orders. Definitely the easiest way to have overtaking. |
