AMOC, Silverstone, 18th October.
Following the HSCC finals at Silverstone, the AMOC also run their final round of the season on the Sunday, so in effect a very good Silverstone double header.

I would love to be there, but there's the Birkett and Walter Hayes on the following 2 weekends, and 'Er Indoors would be wearing mine as earrings were I to take 3 weekends off.

I'll be there in Super GT.
Not sure of the full grid yet, Super GT will run with the Pirelli Ferrari Open again. According to John, there are 6 in Class 1 (including me). Not sure on Class 2. |

Well I might be biassed but I had a great day as did everyone i spoke to who was racing there. The meeting was a late on replacement for the cancelled Donington one from May so didn't get the promotion it needed. There was certainly some close racing and a great atmosphere and a good range of cars from over 85 yrs of racing !!!

I enjoyed it. Nice crowd of people, most pleasant indeed.
Even if my car did have cardboard tyres, wobbly suspension, and oil-pump belt that decided to take a holiday on lap7. |

What is car No.37 in the montage of photo's posted by brands please? It was lovely to look at but not in the programme and I didn't catch sight of it at lunchtime. I was marshalling so couldn't go and look at other times.

Yes, indeed it is although not an original DB4GT Zagato. It is Darren McWhirter's and started life, I believe, as an 'ordinary' DB4 and has now been fitted with a Zagato replica body and a 4.2 litre engine. It's very quick (it won on Sunday) and very good to see out, especially as the appearance of any original is an extremely rare event these days, although we were lucky to see 2 or 3 in the Silverstone Classic Pre 63 GT race.

Race 1 - Historic class Aston Martins
9 starters; 9 finishers
Disappointing entry, all the more so since this was on the International circuit, but we did get a couple of very good battles in this 20 minute race. I'll go straight into the pics. Pic 1 shows Keith Piper in his trusty International (5), the oldest car in the race and one he has campaigned for many years. He finished 8th. Pic 2 is of Timothy Stamper's DB2/4 (69), a car which held a comfortable 4th for sometime but finished 6th, so I suspect a spin or mechanical problem. Pic 3 shows David Reed in his tweaked DB2 (53), which cantered to an easy 14 second victory. Veteran Colin Campbell finished 9th in his DB2 (36). |

Race 1 - Historic class Aston Martins (continued)
33 is Mark Campbell's DB2/4 MkI in whch he became embroiled in a great battle with Jim Campbell's Ulster bodied MkII (26 - pic 2). Another excellent dice was that for 2nd place between Nicholas Ruddell in his DB MkIII (40) and Mark Midgeley in his DB2 (52), Midgeley indulging in some lurid driving to stay on terms. Pic 4 shows Jim Campbell taking a tighter line; he was to get by Mark on the last lap, much to the latter's chagrin and they finished 4th and 5th. Pic 5 shows Midgeley again, still trying very hard, but these slides cost him and he finished 3rd 2.4 seconds behind Ruddell. Final pic is of 7th placed Glynn Allen in his DB2/4 MkII(45).

Race 2 - Pirelli Ferrari Formula Classic

After a few laps of this 20 minute race, 'brands' who was stationed, as I was, down at Abbey, observed that this race displayed an 'end of term' exuberance which manifested itself in much locking up of brakes, spinning and the occasional contact. I'm not sure whether we should thank them for the spectacle or gently chastise them for the errors; maybe a bit of both. In fact, we didn't even get to see the front row of Nicky Paul-Barron and Marco Pullen as they were out before half a lap (a coming together?) and as they headed towards us for the first, it was James Cartwright who had the lead in his 328GTB from a probably rather surprised Chris Rea (28 - 308GT4) - see a fuzzy Pic 1. Down the order William Jenkins (38) and Peter Fisk (30) came together and demonstrated synchronised spinning - Pic 2 - both rejoining the race, at the back of the field. In pic 3, Rea, a true gent on and off the track, stays wide to allow the locking up Peter Everingham (12) to slide through on the inside, whilst David Tomlin (6), awaits his turn to pass. Next, Ben Cartwright, who finished 4th in his 328GTB (72) narrowly avoids contact with the spinning Christopher Compton-Goddard (44 - 7th). Pic 5 shows a pair of 308GT4s, as John Watts (14) takes the place from Richard Fenny (25). Watts was to finish 10th, Fenny, 14th. Last pic of this post shows Fisk and Jenkins together again as they work their way back through the pack, with Fisk's car showing plenty of damage. |

Race 2 - Pirelli Ferrari Formula Classic (continued)
Tomlin (6), having passed Rea, then took 2nd from Everingham and went after the leader, Cartwright. Pic 2 shows Fred Honor (20 - 8th) possibly unaware of the spinning Nick Cartwright (3 - 13th) behind him. 2 is Stuart Anderson's 250TRC replica based on 250GTE mechanicals, providing a stark contrast to the much later shapes, which finished 12th. Having caught the leader, Tomlin then took the lead through Abbey (pic 4), only to outbrake himself at the same place a lap or two later, and concede the lead back to Cartwright. Cartwright then held on to win by just 0.129 secs. Pic 5 is of William Jenkins (38) whose torrid race came to and end this way (see also brands earlier pic), but his fellow first lap spinner, Fisk (30) was disqualified although I know not what for. The final pic is of a car which looks a little too civilised for racing, the Mondial T cabrio (4 - 16th) of Didier Benarova. The Mondial is regarded as one of the poor relations of the marque, but I've always rather liked the model, particularly in Coupe form. For the record, Chris Rea came a fine 5th and won Class 2.
