Steve how long have you been researching all this? and where did you manage to get all the info from? Its really interesting to see who had what and when. Your next Task Steve is to jot down EVERY time each car has recorded at every hillclimb event......... over the last 30 years! I expect the thread up by MONDAY MORNING!

As for my next task! Well my comments would be something along the lines of sex and travel! PS Gould chassis haven't been used in hillclimbing for 30 years yet! |

Steve, While going through some old Autosports recently I came across a short item on the Gould-Terrapin Mk1 of 1979-80, presumably one of David Gould's earliest projects, which doesn't appear on your list?

There was a Terrapin that ended up with an 1100cc BD? ontop of the Mini gearbox. This was followed by the Gould Terrapin which had a longitudinal 1600cc BDA and Hewland box. This is described in some detail by Allan Staniforth in 'Race and Rallycar Source Book'.

What about the car Richard Fry had built originally with the Hart and later a Judd CV engine? I think it was the second one built. I'm sure I've got something in my notes suggesting it was heavily damaged at Shelsley a few years ago when it was being shared by the chap who used to run a Porsche GT2. Unfortunatly I'm not on the web at home so I'm typing this from memory at work and I can't remember his name. Roland Jones possibly?
Didn't RH430 also end up with a Gould rear end? Was this from the Brown car's original 2.0 set up? Coincidentally I'm so glad to have found this forum. It seems I'm not the only " rivet counter " in the hillclimb paddock! |

You could well be right, but I definatly remember Sean Gould driving it, although the front wing was a full F3 and not a speed event version, at least untill they fitted the V8. It does beg the question of what's the difference between a Gould modified RT37 with Gould wings and a Judd compared to a full GR37 though! ( laughs ). Any answers to that one Steve?
I'll dig out a few old programs over the weekend and see what it was called when it had the CV in it. Sean enthused about the turn in and traction, so it may well have been used mainly for development work. |

I've had a look through back issues of Speedscene and the Richard Fry car is most definatly refered to as a Gould GR37 both in 1999 and in 2000 when it was co driven by Richard Jones. It was heavily damaged at Shelsley on June 10th 2000, and my notes state that it was then sold on to Roger Moran. The history of the car is well known since then. I seem to remember getting this information during a conversation with Roger when he first acquired the car, but it could be worth double checking. Hope this helps clarify it's history.

I'm just trying to put together a history of each Gould hill climb car and it seems that Chassis 2 (the Fry/Moran/etc.) car was originally a 2.5 Hart-engined car for Tom Brown. By mid-season 1997 it was powered by a 3.5 Judd CV and with Richard Fry. Contemporary reports confirm the first two GR37s were Hart-engined originally, but Fry's car may have been based on an RT36 tub (can anyone confirm?).
Following its Shelsley crash in 2000, the car apparently went back to Gould and when I saw it again in August of that year it was mainly in bare carbon fibre finish, with only the rear wing showing signs of its previous colours. It was still with Richard Fry at that point. I think this clears things up a bit, but I do wonder if Gould re-chassised the car? |

Thanks for the reply Roy - have seen your car many times, first with Tony Marsh/Sean Gould driving and later with Groves/Ranson and Jouhar/Smith.
Whilst in Martin Groves' ownership it had the high airbox fitted ('GR37B-style), but still with the air filters poking out of the engine cover: I often wondered why they didn't go for a full high airbox intake? Ideas? |

Australian Gould
AutoAction April 11-17 2007 notes Andrew Howell winning the over 2000cc Formula Libre class in Round 2 of the Victoria hillclimb championship at Gippsland Park in a Gould GR55B. Which chassis is this?

It'd be GR55B-11-X.

My first guess is that an attempt was made to balance the air flow between the trumpets i.e. the rears would in all likelyhood, receive more air due to external air flow where the front trumpets under the original bodywork would be reliant on being fed from the engine bay. However, the present added high air box has limited advantage. The design of an airbox is critical if any gains are to be made. For an enclosed airbox to give any advantage it requires to be sealed and flow testing conducted to ensure adequate and equal air flow/feed to all trumpets. |
