'Babalus'?

This guy's testing F3000 with Coloni, but why doesn't he seem to have a proper name?

"Babalus" is perpetuating the long tradition in motor racing of drivers competing under a pseudo. Italians are very found of this. "Gimax" and "Geki" even made to F1 ! The Mille Miglia and Targa Florio entry lists had dozens of names like that (Tiger, Athos, Porthos, Aramis & d'Artagnan, Apache, Pam, Gibi, Poker, Amphicar, Shangri-La, Zorba, Nomex, Don Pedrito, Frank mcBoden, Snoopy or Tex Willer to name a few !). Babalus was a strong constestant in Italian and European Formula Renault. He was equally decent in Italia/Euro F3000 with Draco Engineering IIRC.
His real name is Matteo Santoponte (sp) !

Yes indeed ! This short list was just off the top of my head and there have even funnier one than Snoopy ! A large number of Marvel super heroes also had their fans among amateur racers ! Another funny one was "Popsy Pop" as were famous ALFA drivers "Ben Hur" and "The Tortoise" ! Would be fun to put up a list of this (almost) lost tradition !

And there was I thinking someone had been christened "John B&Q"....

My favourite of the "pseudonym" gang - "Stingbrace" and there's a brownie point for anyone who can explain why the name came about.

That'll Stefano Sebastiani (I think). Stands for Stefano in Great Britain Race - he wan'ted to keep it quiet as he was the manager of a big hotel in London, and didn't think his employers would take kingly to him racing. The most successful of recent times though has to be "John Winter", who managed to keep winning Le Mans secret from his family, apparently they just thought he went on a lot of fishing trips.....

Some people even went through more than one pseudonym - "Pierre Chauvet" later rechristened himself "Frederico Careca".
