Le Mans Computer Games

Have any of you played/ owned the Playstation 2 game Le Mans 24 hours?
I just wondered whether it was worth having as it seems like it can be picked up for a budget price now.
Also there seems to be suggestions of two different versions – any ideas?
Thanks
Pilg.

There's a PlayStation 1 one, but that's as realistic as a failed suicide attempt with an AK47 assult rifle. Cracking fun though

Satorian has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
Your best bet are PC games.

Get GTR2 and the two LM addon tracks to flog some GTs around LM with realtime time lighting and weather.

Or for a quick gaming fix on a console, get GT4. It has GTs, Le Mans Prototypes and indeed Le Mans in different versions.

Have a look here for an ultra-realistic Le Mans project for rFactor:

That's not very practical advice though, because it could take weeks, months or even years until that one is released. Nice to have an eye on, sure, but nothing somebody looking to do some simulated racing right now should be concerned with.

I'd go for the cheap offer of the PS2 and buy Gran Tourismo 4. It's great fun and includes quite some Le Mans greats. Do yourselfe the favour of adding the steeringwheel set to,for it'll add a big dose of realism to the game.
(the icing on the cake though,is the inclusion of the Nordschleife. Still THE most accurate replica of this great track)

However, for real hardcore simulation you should deffinetly go for a Logitech steeringwheel set up and drive simulators like rFactor and GTR2.
The good thing is that you can keep adding new tracks and cars to your collection. At the moment work is underway for the entire startinggrid of LM 2006 and also the latest Peugeot is nearing completion!

Consider who you may be talking to Satorian A lot of those screenies are by a guy called "raceralexuk"

..You won't have to wait long for the LM circuit, and the cars will be out within this lifetime

The sooner the better, I say. Even if my RSC account lays dormant, I'm still following the simracing scene with great interest and am looking forward to a bunch of rF mods like GTx5, PTC conversion, SuperGT mod, LMS mod and NAGT.
With the new/improved driver changes in rF in 1.1250 a really big and prominent multiplayer Le Mans should be a blast.

So unless it arrives within the next few weeks, Pilgrimage would be well advised with pursuing his other options if he's really eager to get a simracing fix.

I've got the PS2 Le Mans game, and for a while there I was really into it. Having a grid of more than 20 cars makes it much more exciting to race over an extended period than the Gran Turismo 4 version. The change from day to night is pretty cool too. For a cheap price, it's well worth a look. That's why I just bought the racer "Enthusia" for my PS2. It was $4 new, and although nowhere near as good as GT4, I like having the variety.

No, it's with chicanes. In my understanding the 2004 version is a NR2k3 conversion, while the other one is of F1C origin. Both have their flaws. I wish the GT4 versions could be converted.

If you're willing to go a touch leftfield, see if you can pick up a Dreamcast on eBay and get Le Mans for it. It shows its age somewhat but does have a nice array of late 1990s cars, fun tracks (Brno, Donington, Le Mans, Bugatti etc) and genuinely decent racing with full grids.

I haven't seen the PS2 port of it but judging by a quick glance around various internet discussion boards the consensus seems to be that the Sega implementation has the edge.

All in it shouldn't cost you a king's ransom and there's a bit of retro chic about having a Dreamcast under the TV.

I've played the 'official' Le Mans games on both the Playstation and PS2.

The first version was rubbish, it didn't have a proper length lap, you went round in about a minute and a half.

The PS2 version was better, the track length seemed correct, but the gameplay (to this fat fingered fool) just wasn't entertaining enough.

Next we come to Gran Turismo 4 on the PS2. All Good, Nothing Bad. I've not played it in a couple of years, but from memory it has the Circuit du Sarthe with and without chicanes. You can race a wide variety of cars for various distances, and the game play is upto the usual GT4 standards. The downsides (as mentioned above) is that you only have a race containing 6 cars and the weather and time of day doesn't change.

(GT4 also has the Nurburgring Nordschliefe on it too ).

I didn't know that one (xjr-9) was comming

But instead of spending time answering this bugger (me ), it's better to spend it on the mod

Hammerdown should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Just discovered this thread. Thanks to whoever started it on the Sportscar racing section!

I've just about run out of things to do on GT4, and am liking what I'm hearing about some of the PC sims. Weather and lighting particularly.

I suppose I need a hi-end PC for these and a force feedback steering wheel (don't suppose my official GT4 logitech will work will it?).

Where do you get the add-on tracks and cars? How much do they cost?

Is GTR2 the way to go?

Thanks for any advice.

The GT4 wheel does work i think on pc, as it's just a usb connection.

GTR2 is quite good, there's a fair amount of tracks out now, as well as some cars being worked on. All free.

The Logitech PS2 wheel does indeed work - I've got a Driving Force (not Pro) and I use it on my PC with no problems at all.

In my opinion, the best sim out there is LiveForSpeed, extremely realistic physics. The downside is that there are no "real life" cars or circuits, however the cars that are included do a pretty good job of representing real equivalents, and the circuits are well designed. No mods available at the moment though. Well worth the 24 quid

rFactor is another good option, with many mods for real life cars and circuits, the best place to get the mods from is rfactorcentral.com. As already mentioned, all the mods are free to download.

With regard to the original topic of this thread, there are already 2 or 3 Le Mans circuit mods available for rFactor, so you can go driving there, albeit not in a Group C car just yet.
