Copyright of Blueprints

The other day I started doing a cutaway drawing and I used a scanned blueprint as a guide (I didn't have Porsche 917 to hand).

My questions are - is there copyright on these plans? In theory anyone with a ruler could draw their own identical plan. If the original plan isn't visible in the final drawing is that ok?

Thanks for any help.

There is an implied copyright on anything that anyone creates. It does get muddy when enforcing copyright on an image of another copyrighted product that also carries copyrighted artwork from another company, such as an image of a race car. I doubt anyone will have a problem with your work.

Well I wrote to Porsche and sent a copy of the image - explaining that I had used the blueprint as a guide to the proportions and layout of the car but that it was not part of the final image.
They said I couldn't print it. Ho hum.

I don't understand - is that the Porsche heavies coming 'round to my place. If it is I'll threaten to torch my 911. They'll have a hostage situation on their hands. Although these days they probably don't care too much about old 911's - they're more interested in SUV's.

Anyway - I'm trying to find out from them what I am allowed to paint - I presume it's alright to draw one from life or from my own photos. Thought I'd better check first though.
