Mid-season driver rankings by Autosport

Basically, because I'm a sad and statistically minded human being with enough free time to do this, I have Autosport's driver ratings for each driver across all 11 races so far for the 2014 season. By adding together all 11 ratings for each driver, and dividing by 11, I have got the mean average rating per weekend for each driver (rounded up where necessary, 11ths are recurring decimals)

This shows just how the driver performs on average, out of 10, per weekend, and by getting this result for all 22 drivers, I can compile Autosport's "official" driver rankings for the 2014 mid-season!

Of course, Autosport hand out a "star performer" award each race weekend, and this is shown using a * symbol. This decides who's been best in a tie break, as you will see. And, of course, I want to hear your views!

2014 Mid-season driver rankings (by Autosport!)

1= Ricciardo 8.73*
1= Hamilton 8.73*
3 Alonso 8.45**
4 Rosberg 8.27*
5 Bottas 7.64*
6 Button 7.36
7 Vettel 7.27*
8= Hulkenberg 7.18
8= Kvyat 7.18
10 Bianchi 7.09
11 Magnussen 7.00*
12= Vergne 7.00
12= Massa 7.00
14= Grosjean 6.82
14= Kobayashi 6.82
16 Perez 6.45
17 Raikkonen 6.09
18 Sutil 5.91
19 Ericsson 5.82
20 Maldonado 5.45
21 Chilton 5.36
22 Gutierrez 5.27

My personal key:
8-9 You’re driving fantastically each weekend. WDC potential.
7-8 Dependable, very solid, if sometimes unspectacular
6-7 Not bad, some good races, some bad
5-6 Not quite sure why you’re in F1

So there you go. Ricciardo and Hamilton have been the joint best driver so far in the 2014 season if you believe Autosport. Jenson Button has outdriven Sebastian Vettel, and I have no idea why Saubers line-up are still in Formula 1.

Something is not right with that list. Why is Vettel #7? Shouldn't he be in #1?

Back on topic, thanks Biscuits for taking the time.

Interesting list. Similar enough to the points table but some difference that I feel give these averages more accuracy.

For example, Kyvat and Bianchi in the top half and kimi being in the bottom. Like that.

For me I would add a second tie break for wins and make LH outright number 1

I'd say Button and Kobayashi strike me as being too high, but other than that, pretty fair.

Bianchi deserves a 'top 10', that's for sure.

I definitely agree with that first line!
(And the general commentary)
I disagree with your last line, because the driver rating transcends their potential to win (as equipment is generally the deciding factor for the majority of results) DR has out performed the equipment more than LH, But LH has had some exceptional recoveries (often from issues not of his doing)

Pretty accurate overall I think, there may be a little English speaking bias (German media would probably have Nico on top, Mediterranean = Alonso!) but seems to be reasonably objective.

That's a pretty good summary. The fact that people mention at least 4 other guys outside the list illustrates the depth in quality of talent on the current grid.

I'm not surprised you're saying that, but to me it shows that both are very solid and dependable, doing a the job they need plus more on occasion. You don't have to have be a standout or an eye-catching driver to be a top quality Formula 1 driver in Button's case, and Kobayashi deserves better than a Caterham.

The order of the top 5 may change from person to person, but the names look right to me. Those in the top 5 have all been a cut above this season.

As for Kimi, sucking Ferrari in twice is impressive. What were they thinking.....

As BIARB says, it's the average of the scores given to each driver in each race over the period so far this season based on Edd Straw's personal rating of the quality of each drive in relation to the perceived quality of the car being driven. That's all and it would explain why the likes of Button and Koby are higher than their results show. At the end of the day it's one man's opinion and you don't have to agree with every one of Edd's rating (I certainly don't!) but over the season so far it seems to have averaged out quite well and seems to be a fair reflection of what we have seen from the drivers.

Another ranking system.

http://www.formula1.com/news/headlin...4/8/16209.html

I (formula1.com) have averaged the best laps completed by each driver over the 11 Grand Prix weekends to date and expressed that as a percentage of the overall fastest laps - in other words, if a driver had been quickest every weekend he would be on a perfect 100 percent. From this it is fairly easy to see which teams and drivers need to pull their fingers out. Mercedes came out on top, with Nico Rosberg fastest at seven of the 11 weekends.

1. Mercedes (Rosberg) - 100.102
2. Mercedes (Hamilton) - 100.495
3. Red Bull (Ricciardo) - 100.958
4. Ferrari (Alonso) - 101.145
5. Red Bull (Vettel) - 101.196
6. Williams (Bottas) - 101.285
7. Williams (Massa) - 101.440
8. Ferrari (Raikkonen) - 101.728
9. McLaren (Button) - 101.783
10. McLaren (Magnussen) - 101.812
11. Force India (Hulkenberg) - 102.040
12. Toro Rosso (Vergne) - 102.122
13. Toro Rosso (Kyvat) - 102.251
14. Force India (Perez) - 102.275
15. Lotus (Grosjean) - 102.847
16. Sauber (Sutil) - 103.130
17. Sauber (Gutierrez) - 103.181
18. Lotus (Maldonado) - 103.524
19. Marussia (Bianchi) - 104.448
20. Marussia (Chilton) - 105.103
21. Caterham (Kobayashi) - 105.353
22. Caterham (Ericsson) - 106.038
