There were still double waved yellows when Rosberg went through at the end even though Alonso's car was already gone. According to Toto he lifted a bit but still set his fastest middle sector.
I guess we'll have to wait a bit longer until we know for sure who's on pole tomorrow. |

I did wonder about that - I knew he'd set a fastest middle sector time, but wasn't sure when the yellows went in..... |

So...If you put in your fastest lap of the session and part of it was through waved yellows..isn't it deleted? Who has a rule book to look at?

Mr Woolf says Nico lifted for the yellows, but was still able to set fastest sector time, apparently.........Lewis seems to have accepted it, but some of the other teams (presumably Red Bull, as Ricciardo was disadvantaged) are unhappy......

Rosberg has been cleared of any wrong doing on his pole lap by the stewards.

F1 could get itself into a right pickle depending on how the 107% qualifying rule is interpreted as 11 cars failed it in Q1 including the Red Bulls, both Force Indias and Bottas. It would mean all 5 going to the back of the grid..........
http://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/re...threat-801649/ The bigger the rule book the more issues that get raised. |

This surely answers one of the questions that has been raised by the Bianchi family; drivers are incapable of policing themselves under caution flags, and the FIA are incapable of ensuring that the rules are complied with. |

The process used in motorsport is more like a law court than that of a referee. This can lead to a lot of decisions looking certain at one time being not so by the time everybody shows their evidence and how smart the people in stewards room are. |

However, sometimes it IS better to evaluate things after the race rather than take an immediate decision, for that decision could be wrong too. Just a few exemples: * the Risi Ferrari at Le Mans 2016 which was given ordered to go to/through the pits but ignored it. And rightly so IMO. * Mortara who was penalised at Zandvoort in the DTM race, which was 'probably' a mistake |

It may well be true, since he was the last one to cross the S/F line (Verstappen behind him was just too late), that even though he lifted he still managed to imnprove his time just by being on track when the track was at its very best. And most likely, he was also informed the yellows were about Alonso and that he (F.A.) he already gone by then. A pity for Hamilton, Ricciardo, and all others involved but you always loose more time when there is a car parked on track or next to it, then when there are yellows and no stranded cars. |

people keep talking about alonso's car being out of the way, but were the marshals and the snatch vehicle (if relevant) out of the way too?

If he didn't stall, maybe Alonso went under his own power once it was safe to do so, and there were no marshalls or snatch vehicle involved? Just guessing though, I have no evidence one way or the other... |

I'd agree with Brundle there, he certainly lifted off at the first yellows and took the left hander more cautiously than he normally would. Once it was clear there was no danger anymore he was back on it. I didn't see any marshals around and I guess Alonso got it going again on his own. Rosberg had luck on his side today. Hopefully the Red Bulls can put the Mercs under pressure tomorrow. Their pace seemed pretty good in all kinds of conditions. |

Q: (Dan Knutson – Speedsport) Daniel, your team-mate reported on one run in Q3 that he lost ‘sync’. What does that mean, and did you have a similar glitch?
DR: Yes, so normally when you download from iTunes… I’m not sure what Max is using but obviously the music must have stopped. Weak wifi! Anyway, it’s normally just for the gears. Like a quick shift setting. Q: Did you have any problem? DR: No, it was all good. |

A clean start and Hamilton takes the lead, as Rosberg very briefly slipped down to third. Mercedes 1, 2.

Jenson Button has been penalised for having faulty brakes. Good to see the sport hasn't gotten any less ridiculous since the last race.

Jenson reported that the brake pedal went to the floor. His team replied with a message, clearly designed for safety, that the hydraulic pressure had dropped. Jenson was penalised for driver coaching on the radio.
That isn't driver coaching. That won't help jenson drive faster. All that is was the team talking about a very clear safety issue and were penalised for it. But don't worry, the Halo(TM) is coming so that'll make it ok again. |
