How do you drive yours?

How would you describe your driving style? For me, I like to get the nose in early, smooth round the corner and accelerate away early, I also tend to lean towards the inside of the corner (or does everyone do that?, im not sure!) Similar to M.Schumachers style shown on the F1 pre-race show.

The best race I did recently was Petit Petit 2006 - karting charity race for Petit Le Mans in Atlanta, GA with ALMS teams and drivers, some of the tyre companies etc. Spun three times on the first lap then realised why - front wheels were pointing in opposite directions (should be pointed out here that this was a three hour race where no rules seemed to apply - water thrown on track to create crashes, hit to get past etc etc).

Learnt a lot that night about using the brake and accelerator to get the kart to turn in when having no steering!

I try to use as little steering lock as possible, locking the rears slightly to get the car turned in, with some trail braking thrown in too. all good fun

I just aim to be as smooth and consistent as possible. I'm agressive on the first two laps so my tyres have come on good. Once I'm on the brakes, to be on the throttle as soon as possible. I donno really I just drive, its all natural...

i prefer the kart to be quite solid,i dont mind understeer too much but can stand oversteer, you just drift sideways off the track!!

ot: luke at sandown at the last race didnt you come off the track within the first 2 laps both heats?

yeah i don't mean to go into too much detail lol but ::

Well practice, right rear flew off. kieran's fault

1st race I slipped back abit after we had our little battle and john langridge 75 flew over me demolished my kart and my arm and hand was bruised and cut.

2nd heat we were late down to the grid as we were still fixing so engine temp was cold, i missed all the big crash in turn 3 but i stalled avoiding it as my engine temp was not warm enough. i understand your frustration sam and i agree it should have been red flagged.

final i started dead last 24th and managed to come 13th after no track time lol.

so i have my new tal-ko now nearly altogether. Sam - you doing the December PFI race which is the TKM GP or something. I'll also be doing a few of the Sandown winter series rounds...

hi sam and luke! i like the front to grip and the rear to follow. i hate oversteer cos i know its slowing me down. a like to hit the brakes just enough so they dont lock up, this way being able to brake later, in some cases when i have understeer which is a pain i will use the brake to get turned in. i dont like usiong armfulls of steering lock cos this upsets the rear end. the aim to be as smooth as pos.

ot: 1st race: my brother took my postion on the grid and i started 19th, and finished 4th on the tail of top 3. ( i dont remember batterling with you at all like)

2nd race: Kart landed on my head on the 3rd corner and left me bruised and cut, THEN one of the main clerks offered to punch me!

final: started 19th and got to 6th catching on the leaders

Its all very natural on Brake and Throtle for me, I concentrate on alot of steering and HATE understeer, and love oversteer...

oversteer is very fun, but its scrubs off speed. all the driving does come naturally though, i dont tend to think about what im doing, just focus on turn in points and braking.

Well I always like the kart to grip at the front more then anything. As long as the back follows its all good.
I don't mind a tiny bit of oversteer just so I can help flick it in some times to corners...
But yeah, all you think about reall is doing what you do naturally...

A small amount of oversteer is good, well maybe not "oversteer" as such, but a small amount to give you the confidence that the things gonna turn in where you want it to.

I had a nasty-ish experience of heaavy understeer the other day... At my local track turn 1 is a wide 90 degree corner, I tried to take it flat out as I always do () But got alot of understeer, then just before I hit the wall, oversteer, and the back of the kart slammed into the wall, then the front. My helmet Jumped up a centemetre, so I had to pull it back down. I fastened in right, but I didnt do it tight enough...

EDIT - The above post says I have never had a crash... and the next post is a crash... Oh well, what do you expect, its me!

miss ure turn in point? the sudden oversteer probably because the front end suddenly dug in, and u probably has a lot of lock on because that is the natural thing people do when they get understeer, although its not what u should do
