Jesper OH should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid

Finally Ludwig Weber was a regular during the season.

1988 – Part 1

Daimler-Benz arrives officially with four factory supported teams; IPS, Marko, AMG and Snobeck – the last team responsible for developing and supplying privateer teams. Thanks to this massive attack 13 190Es would be present at the opening races at Zolder. For normally aspirated engines regulations were freed up from Group A, while Mercedes was additionally allowed lighter body panels like bonnets in lighter material – can’t find the specifics right now.
Another changes for DTM ’88 was that numbers were changed from specific for a car to that of the driver, while race format would from now on be two 100 kilometer races. Thus a slight change of presentation.

Firstly DTM newcomer, but Mercedes veteran of three previous seasons in the French SuperTourisme and various ETCC races Frenchman Dany Snobeck.

Snobeck Racing Services (Dany Snobeck) AEG as major sponsor – I believe Daimler-Benz had interests in this company, that also sponsored Sauber in Group C in 1988!
#27 Dany Snobeck, 14th in point standings
#28 Alain Cudini, 5th in point standings
#? Jean-Pierre Malcher, 44th in point standings - only at the final round

#27 Dany Snobeck, 25th and 7th
#28 Alain Cudini, DNF and 5th

#27 Dany Snobeck, 10th and 1st
#28 Alain Cudini, DNF and DNF

1988.05.22 – Round 7 & 8, Brno
#27 Dany Snobeck, 3rd and 1st
#28 Alain Cudini, 29th (DNF?) and DNS

1988.05.29 – Round 9 & 10, Avus
#27 Dany Snobeck, DNF and DNS
#28 Alain Cudini, 9th and 4th

#27 Dany Snobeck, 12th and 9th
#28 Alain Cudini, 15th and 10th

1988.08.28 – Round 19 & 20, Salzburgring [note 1]
#27 Dany Snobeck
#28 Alain Cudini, pole position

1988.09.18 – Round 21 & 22, Hungaroring
#27 Dany Snobeck, 10th and 8th

#28 Alain Cudini, 4th and 4th
#? Jean-Pierre Malcher, DNF and 13th

[note 1]: After three attempts to start round 19 all ending in red flag situations, this race was abandoned only for round 20 to suffer the same fate. No result was declared, but at least Alain Cudini scored a pole. End of part 1.

A little correction to the AEG sponsorship claim - that was in 1989, as 1988 was with Serpistar/Elf signature.

1988 – Part 2

AMG appeared with 3 cars throughout the season, with at least two Boss black and silver livered cars and a third that might have been white with blue bumpers and Sachs Sporting as major sponsor. A forth car was seen for the final races at Hockenheimring. Both Johnny Cecotto and Marc Hessel snatched from BMWs 1987 line-up.

AMG (Hans-Werner Aufrecht)
#44 Johnny Cecotto
#45 Marc Hessel / #31 Kurt Thiim
#46 Heiner Weiss / #47 Bob Wollek
#65 Jean-Louis Schlesser

1988.03.03 – Round 1 & 2, Zolder
#44 Johnny Cecotto, 8th and DNF
#45 Marc Hessel, 19th and DNF
#46 Heiner Weiss, 16th and 15th

1988.04.24 – Round 3 & 4, Hockenheimring
#44 Johnny Cecotto, 13th and DNF
#45 Marc Hessel, 16th and 21st
#46 Heiner Weiss, 27th and DNF

1988.05.01 – Round 5 & 6, Nürburgring
#44 Johnny Cecotto, 13th and 12th
#45 Marc Hessel, 16th and DNF
#46 Heiner Weiss, 30th and 25th

1988.05.22 – Round 7 & 8, Brno
#44 Johnny Cecotto, 33rd (DNF?) and DNS
#45 Marc Hessel, 9th and DNF
#47 Bob Wollek, DNF and 16th – Brilliant Bobs third saloon car race ever! Regular driver Heiner Weiss spraining his wrist, so Wollek drove the third car.

1988.05.29 – Round 9 & 10, Avus
#44 Johnny Cecotto, 1st and 1st
#45 Marc Hessel, DNF and DNS

1988.06.05 – Round 11 & 12, Mainz-Finthen
#44 Johnny Cecotto, 15th and DNF
#45 Marc Hessel, 19th and 14th

#44 Johnny Cecotto, 11th and 9th
#45 Marc Hessel, DNF and DNS
#46 Heiner Weiss, DNS and DNS

1988.06.26 – Round 15 & 16, Norisring
#44 Johnny Cecotto, 3rd and 4th
#31 Kurt Thiim, 4th and 5th – Hessel booted, Thiim taking over.
#47 Bob Wollek, 25th and DNF

1988.07.17 – Round 17 & 18, Wunstorf
#44 Johnny Cecotto, 7th and 6th
#31 Kurt Thiim, DNF and 11th
#46 Heiner Weiss, DNF and 23rd

1988.08.28 – Round 19 & 20, Salzburgring [note 1]
#44 Johnny Cecotto
#46 Heiner Weiss
#47 Bob Wollek – this might have been a Snobeck entry, as AMG only had four cars for the final.
#31 no mention of Kurt Thiim in the Rallye-Racing report from Salzburgring, but likely in there somewhere, as I don’t have a complete picture of this „race“.

1988.09.18 – Round 21 & 22, Hungaroring
#44 Johnny Cecotto, 1st and 1st
#31 Kurt Thiim, 2nd and 3rd
#46 Heiner Weiss, 24th and 18th

1988.10.16 – Round 23 & 24, Hockenheimring

First time with a four car AMG team – as a try-out for 1989, when a full four car team was planned.

End of part 2.

1988 – Part 4

Newcomer in the Mercedes fold in any conceivable way was (by now) German based but Swedish lead IPS Motorsport of Ingemar Persson. The former Volvo team retained 1985 champion Per Stureson and his 1987 apprentice Anders Lindberg, being joined by former Eggenberger-Volvo driver, German Sigi Müller Junior. For some reason the Lindberg car/entry newer materialised – I suspect a lack of personal sponsor money on the part of Lindberg – and thus no #11 appeared during the 1988 DTM season.

IPS Motorsport (Ingemar Persson)
#10 Per Stureson – 24th in the point standings
#11 Anders Lindberg – never raced
#12 Siegfried “Sigi” Müller Junior – 13th in the point standings

1988.03.03 – Round 1 & 2, Zolder
#10 Per Stureson, 13th and 14th
#12 Sigi Müller Jr., 24th and 9th

1988.04.24 – Round 3 & 4, Hockenheimring
#10 Per Stureson, 23rd and 14th
#12 Sigi Müller Jr., 11th and 13th

1988.05.01 – Round 5 & 6, Nürburgring
#10 Per Stureson, 15th and 20th
#12 Sigi Müller Jr., 12th and 8th

1988.05.22 – Round 7 & 8, Brno
#10 Per Stureson, DNF and DNS
#12 Sigi Müller Jr., 12th and 5th

1988.05.29 – Round 9 & 10, Avus
#10 Per Stureson, 4th and 19th
#12 Sigi Müller Jr., 20th and 7th

1988.06.05 – Round 11 & 12, Mainz-Finthen
#10 Per Stureson, DNF and DNF
#12 Sigi Müller Jr., 27th and 12th

1988.06.18 – Round 13 & 14, Nürburgring Nordschleife
#10 Per Stureson, 22nd and 17th
#12 Sigi Müller Jr., 12th and DNF

1988.06.26 – Round 15 & 16, Norisring
#10 Per Stureson, 18th and 19th
#12 Sigi Müller Jr., 8th and 6th

1988.07.17 – Round 17 & 18, Wunstorf
#10 Per Stureson, DNF and DNS
#12 Sigi Müller Jr., 28th and DNS

1988.08.28 – Round 19 & 20, Salzburgring
#10 Per Stureson
#12 Sigi Müller Jr.

1988.09.18 – Round 21 & 22, Hungaroring
#10 Per Stureson, 19th and 21st
#12 Sigi Müller Jr., 14th and 24th

1988.10.16 – Round 23 & 24, Hockenheimring
#10 Per Stureson, 26th and 28th
#12 Sigi Müller Jr., 5th and 6th

Per Stureson would retire after 1988, while the IPS team would merge into the Mass-Schons team.

End of part 4. Now, the privateers.

1988.08.28 – Round 19 & 20, Salzburgring
#48 Leopold Gallina

Thomas von Löwis and Schwaben Motorsport would be back for another season of DTM racing, but now as Mercedes privateer – remember the WTCC Calder M3? Car being white with blue and gold covering the rear and Fuji Film red/green stripes on the middle. A white/gold 190E appeared in Denmark for Flemming Brøcher in 1989 – the ’88 Scwaben car is a good candidate for the source of this car.

1988 – Part 6

Finally there’s the BMK team. In the Rallye-Racing season preview only Norbert Brenner is mentioned, but Roland Asch was ready for round 1 and Ralf-Werner Müller soon followed. Michael Roppes raced at the Hockenheimring finals where he might have taken over the Müller car, as R-WM wasn’t there.

BMK-Motorsportteam Berlin (?)
#41 Roland Asch – also running as Asch Motorsport!
#42 Norbert Brenner
#43 Ralf-Werner Müller

1988.03.03 – Round 1 & 2, Zolder
#41 Roland Asch, 14th and 11th
#42 Norbert Brenner, DNF and DNS

#42 Norbert Brenner, 23rd and 23rd
#43 Ralf-Werner Müller, 19th and 32nd

1988.05.22 – Round 7 & 8, Brno
#41 Roland Asch, 4th and 11th
#42 Norbert Brenner, 25th and 21st
#43 Ralf-Werner Müller, 18th and 13th

1988.05.29 – Round 9 & 10, Avus
#41 Roland Asch, 14th and DNF
#42 Norbert Brenner, 18th and 16th
#43 Ralf-Werner Müller, 8th and 9th

1988.06.05 – Round 11 & 12, Mainz-Finthen
#41 Roland Asch, 2nd and 2nd
#42 Norbert Brenner, 22nd and 21st
#43 Ralf-Werner Müller, 17th and 16th

1988.06.18 – Round 13 & 14, Nürburgring Nordschleife
#41 Roland Asch, 2nd and DNF
#42 Norbert Brenner, 20th and 15th

1988.06.26 – Round 15 & 16, Norisring
#41 Roland Asch, 2nd and 3rd

1988.07.17 – Round 17 & 18, Wunstorf
#41 Roland Asch, 9th and DNF
#42 Norbert Brenner, 21st and DNS
#43 Ralf-Werner Müller, DNF and DNS

1988.08.28 – Round 19 & 20, Salzburgring [note 1]
#41 Roland Asch

#43 Ralf-Werner Müller, don’t know if he participated

1988.09.18 – Round 21 & 22, Hungaroring
#41 Roland Asch, 7th and 11th
#43 Ralf-Werner Müller, 21st and 22nd

1988.10.16 – Round 23 & 24, Hockenheimring
#41 Roland Asch, 2nd and 2nd
#43 Ralf-Werner Müller, 18th and 14th
#? Michael Roppes, DNF and DNS – this is only a guess, as I don’t know the entry of Roppes’ car. He might have driven an altogether different privateer car.

At some point during the season Mercedes recognised the effort of privateer Roland Asch – he was last seen in a regular DTM seat during the 1985 season in a Ringshausen Ford Mustang – and thanks to his results he started receiving some factory help. Eventually he was beaten into second position by just 16 points by champion Klaus Ludwig. The rest is history, as it’s said…

This concludes my knowledge of 1988 DTM Mercs. My car/entry count ends at 16
AMG – 4
IPS – 2
Snobeck – 3
Marko – 2
BMK – 3
Schwaben – 1
Gallina – 1

1989 – Part 1

Second season of Daimler-Benz factory commitment in the DTM and the first Evo. A modified version of the 2.5 liter engine that had been on the marked (but not raced) since September 1987 would power the new Evo with its adjustable splitters and wings, while extended wheel flares would cover bigger and wider tyres. A delay from a sub-contractor meant that the actual completion of Evos would be delayed and in turn meant only the three factory blessed teams would benefit from the new Evo. Another interesting note from Rallye-Racing magazine is that Mercedes DTM project manager Gerhard Lepler states that the difference between the basic 190E and the Evo warrant completely new chassis for the intended six car factory effort.
AMG and Snobeck were retained, while the IPS-Jet-Racing morphed into the Mass-Schons / MS-Jet-Racing. Helmut Marko on the other hand was dropped for “political” reasons, what ever that meant joining the ranks of privateer Benzes of Schwaben Motorsport, BMK and Godel.

AMG and their intended four car attack on 1989 were scaled down to just two when the season started at Zolder, while a third entry was seen sporadically later on in the season. With Johnny Cecotto going back to BMW – for the third time in his career! – Klaus Ludwig has been lured away after many years as a Ford man joining Kurt Thiim, who secured his seat by a very strong showing during the last 2/3 of the 1988 season. Joachim Winkelhock replaced a sick Ludwig at Norisring and would drive a third entry at the following race at Hockenheimring, while Karl Wendlinger joined the team for the final round, also at Hockenheimring.
Black and silver color scheme retained but König Pilsener would join Boss as primary sponsor.

1989.04.09 – Round 1 and 2, Zolder
#1 Klaus Ludwig (2.3-16), 28th/DNF and DNS

#2 Kurt Thiim (2.3-16), 5th and 8th

1989.04.16 – Round 3 and 4, Hockenheimring
#1 Klaus Ludwig (2.3-16), 1st and 20th
#2 Kurt Thiim (2.3-16), 7th and 6th

1989.04.30 – Round 5 and 6, Nürburgring
#1 Klaus Ludwig (2.3-16), 3rd and *DNS
#2 Kurt Thiim (2.3-16), 6th and 13th
*Ludwig was involved in the horrendious looking accident that kept Ford driver Armin Hahne out of action until September. Both cars were write offs. The accident caused the second race to be red flagged and for obvious reasons Ludwig didn’t take the re-start.

1989.05.14 – Round 7 and 8, Mainz-Finthen
#1 Klaus Ludwig (2.5-16 Evo), DNF and DNS
#2 Kurt Thiim (2.3-16), 5th and 1st
First race for the new Evo. Roland Asch (MS) and Dany Snobeck (Snobeck) raced similar cars.

1989.05.28 – Race 9 and 10, Avus
#1 Klaus Ludwig (2.5-16 Evo), 3rd and 10th
#2 Kurt Thiim (2.3-16), 6th and 7th

1989.06.17 – Race 11 and 12, Nürburgring Nordschleife
#1 Klaus Ludwig (2.5-16 Evo), *DNS and DNS
#2 Kurt Thiim (2.5-16 Evo), DNF and 5th
*Ludwig had secured pole position but had to undergo a kidney operation instead.

1989.06.26 – Race 13 and 14, Norisring
#2 Kurt Thiim (2.5-16 Evo), 1st and DNF
#3 Joachim Winkelhock (2.5-16 Evo), DNF and DNS
Winkelhock as replacement for sidelined Ludwig

1989.07.02 – Race 15 and 16, Hockenheimring
#1 Klaus Ludwig (2.5-16 Evo), DNF and DNS
#2 Kurt Thiim (2.5-16 Evo), 2nd and 6th
#3 Joachim Winkelhock (2.5-16 Evo), 6th and DNF

1989.08.06 – Race 17 and 18, Diepholz
#1 Klaus Ludwig (2.5-16 Evo), 1st and 1st
#2 Kurt Thiim (2.5-16 Evo), DNF and DNS

1989.09.03 – Race 19 and 20, Nürburgring
#1 Klaus Ludwig (2.5-16 Evo), 1st and 1st
#2 Kurt Thiim (2.5-16 Evo), 2nd and 4th

1989.10.15 – Race 21 and 22, Hockenheimring
#1 Klaus Ludwig (2.5-16 Evo), 5th and DNF
#2 Kurt Thiim (2.5-16 Evo), 8th and 19th
#29 *Karl Wendlinger (2.5-16 Evo), 17th and 20th/DNF
Wendlinger supposed to race a third Marko entry, but the car was smashed in a hill climb by Franz Klammer. Instead Wendlinger got an invitation to race a third AMG entry originally intended for Mauro Baldi from the Sauber-Mercedes Group C programme.
Two old style 2.3-16s and at least three new 2.5-16 Evos at AMGs disposal.

Helmet Marko AMG MB 190E 16V + later DTM car

I own two of Phil Wards former racecars from Australia. I am in the USA near Washington, DC and they are for sale.

I found this forum tracking down history. I dont have it all compiled yet but I do know for sure that one car, has a plate on the dash that says, "Reithmuller Ward Mercedes-Benz International Autosport car # 01". I believe this would help identify it as one of the two Helmut Marko cars that Bob Jane got in 1987. The hand stamped AMG serial says "AMG2019756" This is of course confusing because "97" is the year code and clearly is improper. AMG couldnt verify the number for this reason.

The other car AMG identified as built in 1992. Serial number AMG2019249.
Construction – Maas/ Schons racing
Competition – 1992 Jaques Laffite (DTM)
1993 Stig Amthor (DTM)
1994 Thieman/ Zak (Endurance racing)
[information is from AMG archive]

Description found online. Wards profile at aussieracingcars.com; [assume to be same car because AMG records show it in 1994 with Zakspeed]
“In 1994 Mercedes-Benz AMG offered Phil Ward an ex DTM evolution 190E 16V factory built race car formerly run by the Zakspeed team in the German Touring car championship (DTM) to convert and run in the inaugural Australian 2.0 litre Super Touring championship”

Incidently I also have an engine bult by International Engine Services (IES), England, to the tune of $25K US.

Please, please if anyone has more information on either the early Marko 190E 2.3's or the later DTM car besides what is on Phils site please let me know. I'd also love pictures.

Thank you,

Hall Miller,

Phil Ward Mercedes AMG 190E 16V racecars

The Phil Ward 190E's are in the United states. I own 2 of them

AMG2019249 and AMG2019756 (serial discrepency)

I think one is an early Marko car and the other is the late DTM car

Please pm me.

Could the second serial actually be AMG2019256 or even AMG2018756? It's easy enough to read a badly stamped 2 or 3 as a 7 or an 8 as a 9.

I might have photos of the Lafitte/Amthor car from 1992/1993, any idea of the colors? Were the Amthor colors green, with "Car Royal" in red?

Hello,

I'm brand-new to this forum as I just came to this interesting thread via google.

Andy, I have photos of the '92 Laffite Car and the '93 Amthor Car as well (from the German books Tourenwagen-Story '92 and '93, where almost every car is pictured from the side), but scanning them would take some time as I don't have a scanner right now. I will try to scan this evening in my office, if You're interested.

And yes, as You mentioned, the bright green car with red "Car Royal"-titles is Amthor's car of '94.

Greetings,

Marco.

Edit/PS: To answer the question about the colours already: Laffite's car of '92 was white with yellow stripes and "Castrol"-Titles, Amthor's '93 190E was white, too, with a blue stripe and "Car Royal"-Titles.
