I hear that Operation Yellowhammer has been suspended, which of course it should be as we’re not leaving this week. But I didn’t realise that the M20 ‘Operation Brock’ nightmare had been put back in place ready fo the 31st, and now has to be dismantled again.........

This is all such a big and messy farce that I think even Brian Rix would have been embarrassed to be involved with it!

It does - but do you really believe that there will be any surplus once the existing EU funded things are paid for and the extra bureaucracy we're going to introduce is factored in? I can't see it myself. Red tape will suck up any excess that may exist.

I got caught up in traffic that was avoiding Brock yesterday morning - the M20 was knackered so the A20, M2 and A2 were also borked. Wasn't as bad this morning - presumably people have got their rat runs sorted.

I see that the commemorative Brexit 50p coins (dated 31st October) are to be shredded and melted down after the latest UK departure delay. Perhaps next time it will be better to mint them after we've left?

You can of course spin things any way you wish to suit your narrative. I'm only looking at the figures produced by the EU. And don't forget red tape exists everywhere. I really don't see how it can be any worse after exit.

Sounds like the M25 on any normal day. And we're still in the EU.

There's no "may exist" about it. The surplus (ie the net amount that we pay to the EU), already factors in the "existing EU funded things" of course - we pay the EU about £13Bn, and get back about £4Bn. That £9Bn net contribution covers a heck of a lot red tape...........

Agreed - there are articles aplenty on both sides of the argument to support whichever side you happen to believe. The truth I suspect is somewhere in between. I'm basing my pessimism on seeing the about of extra crap that we're having to produce.

ain't that the truth! Also the road system in kent is only ever a French strike away from chaos anyway.

Tell you one good thing that's come about during this latest Brexit c..k up.

I applied for my passport to be renewed online last Wednesday and have just had an email from them saying it's on it's way and I'll have it within 2 days.

I hung on and hung on, hoping when I renewed it I would get a blue GB one, but ran out of time and as I'm going away in November, so bit the bullet.

Talk about good service.

Yes all that red tape you know. Frankly I don't care what colour the passport is and I think it was daft to make it an issue. But the services like this are becoming more efficient.

Moving services online is nothing to do with Brexit though? That's just progress. Credit where it's due though - a lot of the online government services are pretty good (taxing a car for example - much better than queuing in a Post Office to have an argument with the cantankerous old biddy behind the counter about whether your MOT and insurance are valid). The HMRC stuff is utter bobbins though.

Last time I changed my passport it was sent to Dusseldorf! Took two weeks which I thought was pretty good. I was living in Qatar at the time.

Lunch in Qatar, passport in Dusseldorf? Surely it.would have been more use in Qatar.

I agree about the improved efficiency of government services. I tax all my vehicles online. I enter up my accounts into the approved form online. It just "happens" and is impressive.

Mrs V has just found the need to renew her passport and decided to look at doing it on-line. It ran out nearly 10 years ago and she has misplaced it. Has the passport been lost or stolen? was one of the questions, with just yes or no options. As her answer had to be 'yes' (well, it' lost but of no use to anyone because it's out of date). More questions ensued and she received an email to say someone would be in touch within 24 hours (yeah right!). The phoned her at 10 past 8 last night and sorted things out, we weren't expecting that sort of efficiency!

...and that of course is because the admin, production and despatch of passports (but *not* the vetting and authorisation) was put out to the private sector around 20 years ago. Some 4000 public sector clerical workers were TUPE'd to the private sector and now that work is done a great deal more efficiently by a quarter of that number.

So an election on December 12th for the UK.

All the electioneering and chest-beating and accusations will probably dent the "Christmas Spirit" during campaign time.

Don't know that it will end up providing some certainty but hopefully for everyone, it does.

My guess is that it will result in another hung parliament, with a 4-way split between the Tories, the Brexit Party, Labour possibly in alliance with the SNP and the LibDems, with a sprinkling of independents thrown in for good (or maybe that should be bad?) measure.

A recipe for chaos because none of them will be able to create a coalition.

Hope you're wrong Mike but I suspect that unfortunately you're right on the money.

It'll end up with them all claiming that they have a mandate from the people for this obfuscation or that obfuscation whilst everything heads down an accelerating whirlpool.

Politicians are not serving the populace well there, or in the US or here in Australia in recent times - all of us deserve better.

Boris FTW. I'm eagerly anticipating a working majority to let the country get on with life and prosperity outside of the suffocating EU. I will be doing my little bit to make it happen. The doomsayers may like to ponder on this.
