Best radio
The best radios for racing circuit work seem to be the Motorola GP300 series particularly the GP360 which is compact, reliable and can be supplied with an optional extra clip-on for use with a headset. They will last for at least a full day on circuit and you can buy them with a headset using an in-line 'press-to-talk' switch so you can use them with your hands in your pocket on a cold day. Ideal for Scotland !! If you go to e-bay there are 6 for sale with a 6 set charger and earpieces for only £500 - that's about 25% of the new price. Hurry up.

Please remember that all radio's running on the MSA frequency need to be licenced. Also most circuits give radio's for specific posts. Using land lines as the main source. (See thread already running on this site.) The use of a radio on a circuit or rally that the organisers are not aware of could be dangerous.
So for circuits, hillclimbs etc if the organisers want you to have a radio they will give you a radio. Rally radio's also need to be licenced as should all the operators. |

Can I introduce the human factor here please guys? One of the hardest and most stressful tasks that Clerks of Course have is controlling how information about incidents is released to the interested parties. I'd like you to consider how you'd feel as the parent/spouse/child of a badly injured competitor, if say, people in the pit lane seemed to know more than you but wouldn't tell you anything? Or that you heard a radio message that made a minor injury sound like a terrible one? Or even if you learned of that person's passing over the internet before anybody had telephoned you at home to tell you?
All of which would of course be unforgivable, yet are becoming much more likely because of the proliferation of scanners etc. I hate not knowing what's going on or being left out of the loop as much as anybody. But please consider how much damage can be done, even with just a scanner, and use any radio equipment (official or personal) with the utmost respect and care. |
