Warren Cullen

One of those guys that appeared out of nowhere, got a nice sponsorship deal with K-mart Auto.

Working for K-mart Auto at the time it was going to bigger than Ben Hur, most unusual we thought for G J Coles to part with dollars for car racing. Coles had a policy of not getting between them and their cash.

Did they run the full 1984 ATTC series or just Sandown and Bathurst

Reading Alan Jones's book it makes mention of the Commodore suspension as being put in upside down for the first Bathurst in 1981.

The 1984 Bathurst entry with K-mart Auto sponsorship shows a respectable 4th place, for the VK Commodore.

Did Warren run Bathurst in 1985, with K-mart Auto sponsorship or back to the wrecking yard

"Go with the Pro's", says the logo on my work supplied spray jacket from that era.

Must be a story or two about Jones/Cullen working arrangement.

Cullen did indeed run the full 1984 ATCC season and had a pretty strong year. He finished 4th in points, highlighted by a 3rd place at Lakeside and finished on the lead lap for all races except Barbagallo.

Dick Johnson won the 84 championship on 134 points, but it was tight for second with Brock, McLeod and Cullen on 96, 95 and 91 points respectively.

The V8Sleuth makes mention that one of the cars used in the '85 JH1000 by Mr Cullen & Mr Grice is actually the car that went to Europe in '86 for Mr Grice and a cast of renta drivers to show the Europeans what's what..

Funny from that though is that one of the 2 chassis was badly crashed in '85 in practice.. and withdrawn. Wonder if that was repaired & sent to Europe..

The remaining chassis ran in the '86 JH1000 for Mr Cullen and Supa Salvaga colours, and in '87 as the Condomodore....

The car crashed in practiced was Cullen's 1984 car updated to Group A spec and repaired and used by Cullen in 1987 and 1987.
The race car was a brand new car built by Roadways and debut at the Sandown 500.

Cullen was certainly a proven privateer going back to the A9X days.

In Commodores he ran as high as second in the '83 James Hardie 1000 before retiring and somehow managed to finish seventh in 1986 after being 55th on the second lap back up to 20th then falling back to 40th!

Wasn't he in the car wrecking business (not on the track!)? Seem to think a place in Benalla had some connection.

I remember that spending several hours going sideways in the wet. Couldn't catch the cars in front, wasn't going to be caught by those behind, so Mr Grice basically enjoyed himself for a whole stint or two. Probably couldn't do that with modern tyres, shame! he got the biggest round of applause at the finish.

Correct, Warren had the yards in Benalla and Thomastown.
