Top Speed
Ive just posted a topic in the indy forum about top speeds ...which got me thinking of V8's..whats the highest speed achieved by a V8 supercar..and im talking from say 93 onwards..i believe glenn Seton may have cracked the 300 kph mark at bathurst in 97 ..but Im not sure ..are they going any faster than that now ???
and ok ..while we are on the subject does anyone know the top speed of all time..im guessing the Nissan GTR and ford sierra's were quite quick ...but just how fast were they ?? |

I doubt that that the GRP A's were that quick, at least their lap times weren't that fast...I guess I'll have to dig up some lap times
AS far as V8s top speed- it's hard to say. From what I gather, that 300km/h was a little dubious...I'd imagine 290-something at the end of Conrod straight, what they would do at either the Ford or Holden proving grounds (etc) I wouldn't know. I remember Win Percy once clocked up some ridiculous speed at the Holden speed bowl in the early 90s.. |

Amazingly, the Sierras, GT-Rs and V8 Supercars have all maxed out in the low 290s. Perhaps, they reach a wall of wind resistance at 300km/h. Also, with Caltex Chase a lot of teams are now gearing their cars lower than in the days when we had the full length Con Rod straight.

I am certianly not an expert, but I'd say just below 300km/h is close to the mark. Wheels Magazine got Glen Seton to test the top speed of the Falcon V8 Supercar along an airport runway. I think he got up to 280km/h, running medium downforce and gear ratios.

Hey there Ralfie, where abouts did you get your figures from? 280 for a Mondeo versus 282 for a Commodore...and if Super Tourers are faster than V8s over the top of the hill, why would their lap times be 5 seconds a lap slower? Also, the only Mondeos to race at Bathurst are the Hills cars (or ex-Hills car as the case may be)...I wouldn't have thought that they were that good with top line speed? One last point, I always suspected that the fastest speed set by a Super Tourer might have been Greg Murphy in qualifying for Bathurst 1998, when he got a massive tripple tow that put him on pole position.

all figues come from telecasts so thats about over all different years but I never found out the top speed of the Renult which I think would have been faster still. the VT speed trap was from the Kmart car in the shotout . as for Mondeo it was always good in a straight line but never handled to good anyway S/T really lost the fight with the V8 up mountain straight more than anywhere else also accleration between the to classes was the main loss for S/T

Hehe...well I've got all of the Bathurst races on tape, I'll have a good gawk for myself sometimes...so that would have been the 97 race? The second car of Thompson/Skene/McGill was a disqualification, and only lasted 56 stop-start laps, while the Hills/Pavicevic car only lasted 80 laps, once again, coughing and farting all the way. I think Ch7 made a cock up
