I was just watching some of the 2000 24 Hours of Le Mans and in particular the Audi and Panoz battle. It is amazing how much time those cars lose under braking compared to today's cars.

Back then, the braking zones were much longer and the cars kind of eased into the corners. Today, the cars divebomb and attack the corners.

Because Audi's rpms will be really useful for Toyota who is uses completely different engine and vice versa? If they wanted to be secretive about this, why Audi shows these and a bit more already in its onboard webstream? And why is it that when Audi and Peugeot actually did use the same type of engine the cameras in the Peugeots were typically placed further in the cockpit and showed at least partly the steering wheel?

Don't think teams has much to say in this (from LM24 supplementary regs):

Quote:
74.1.1.7 – Competitors must not refuse the fittings of the
organiser’s cameras inside their cars.
74.1.1.8 – The organiser keeps the right to install 1 or more
inboard video cameras into and/or outside the cars.
Might not be a "fetish" for ACO either as I origially said, but more to do with where it is simply technically easier to place and which one shows the road ahead better.

I was really surprised how much information is shown on Audi's onboard streams.

You can see Kilometers per hour, RPMs, what gear they are in and the vertical and lateral G forces.

They place the camera there because that's the best outward view there is! If they had a camera behind the driver we would get a limited view of the outside surroundings. We already know they sit pretty far away from the windscreen, so a camera there is nice but it won't show much of the racing action.

Some interesting stuff here from DRIVE. A new Driver's Eye series following different guys. First up is Leh Keen at the Montreal Grand-Am race.

Some good behind-the-scenes insight in the paddock and also setting up the car.

Drive's doing some fantastic stuff lately, Im a big fan and Im really liking this. Be interesting to see who else they follow, hoping for some more Grand Am and ALMS. Helps that they chose someone like Leh Keen whos interesting which certainly appeals. They should do Boris Said

This is what I mean too, but before 2011, Peugeot used to have the cameras bit more behind, enough to show little bit of the steering wheel.

e.g.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3YgDeoKXeo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNhpIrzydtk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ru-w6VngDz8

Then in 2011, both Audi's and Peugeot got the "almost next to windscreen" cams, which undoubtedly show the road best, but makes you think the car drives itself...

Also have to wonder why Toyota didn't have a camera once post-LM rounds, not even at Fuji.

The only onboard that I've seen from Toyota besides that generic 'windscreen view' outside LeMans was at Goodwood FOS

Some cool qualifying footage from Le Mans '98.
Apparently Eurosport was having technical difficulties when this was being broadcasted, so for most of the video there's no commentary and you get to hear the cars in all their glory.

Very nice. I'd have given anything to be at the race in 97/98/99! Absolute dreamland!

This may not be 'cool' (infact, I can't decide if it's the best or worst thing my eyes have ever seen), but this makes G56 seem a little less out of the ordinary...

Wow. Amazing footage.

Horrifying 'safety' 'standards' back in the day, of course.
Photographer lying in road? CHECK
Milk churns full of petrol sloshing around in the pits? CHECK
Marshals standing on the apex of Eau Rouge while 917s storm past on a wet track? CHECK
Etc etc? CHECK

It's amazing so FEW people died back then.

I just laughed at seeing that video. And all the safety standards they have today that didn't even exist back then. A photographer lying in on the road? One running across the track before the cars come? Insanity by today's standards.
