honda civic race transmission
Hi. does anyone know if its possible to get hold of a low final drive ratio [4.6/4.9:1] for a Honda L3 type box as fitted to Civic/CRX about 1988 to 91,or a Rover 216gti.Iv searched the net but cant find any info.If theres any Honda gurus about that know if the cw&p from another Honda box is inter changable please let me know.Im running a 216 that had a standard 4.25:1 diff and was marginally ok but we fitted a race box with LSD and didnt realise until we ran it that its a 3.8 so massivly overgeared. Before we put in the old 4.25 Id like to if theres something lower??

I have found something in U.S. but it's limited to a web page.
http://www.sbmsinc.com/race_shop.html Toward the bottom of the page they offer a 4.78 ring and pinion for $950. I have no other information. I am also not associated with the proprietors in any way, shape or form, nor have I dealt with them. Good luck, Stevan |

Speak to Mardi Gras Motorsport http://www.mardigras.co.uk/ they are the fountains of all knowleadge on any Honda technical maters over the last 15 years in UK motorsport. They are'nt cheap of course but if its available they can get it or will know what can be done at least.

Oh yes Denis told you I was struggling a bit at Silverstone! It was holding third nearly all the way down the long straight... funnily enough we did a trackday at Cadwell 3 weeks ago and it seemed to suit it,and put in some cracking times.Mind you the old b****r does go well on slicks compared to Toyos! Thanks for info guys, and I tried MardiGras but no help.

L3/pg1
I might be wrong, but I think that the L3 and PG1 gearboxes are very closely related, so that is a route worth investigating. Quaife might be a place to start?

thanks but i think pg1 is specifically a rover box whereas the L3 is a Honda. The Tomcat uses a pg1? Will double check though...

The PG1 is Honda designed and was Honda Japan built for Rover until the UK line came onstream around 1987. I'm sure they are used in far more than just Rover (200, Tomcat, 400, Monty, Maestro, MGF etc) and Lotus Elise.
