CAMS Appoints New CEO
Well they've appointed a new CEO.
May 06, 2010 The Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) today announced the appointment of Mr David Morgan as its Chief Executive Officer. With extensive experience in successfully leading complex organisations, Mr Morgan was previously the General Manager of Chemnet Australia, Australia's largest chemical trading and distribution business. He spent more than 20 years in various roles at Orica (formerly ICI Australia) of which Chemnet is a business unit. Currently he is consulting in the Mining Services industry. Mr Morgan comes to CAMS with a wide ranging career in strategic negotiations, financial and general management and the progressive management of risk and safety standards. CAMS President Mr Andrew Papadopoulos stated "In our search for a new CEO, we undertook an exhaustive process to find a candidate who on one hand has the ability to think strategically and implement a strategic plan, whilst on the other hand has the hands-on experience to manage complex projects and most importantly, engage with our 50,000 members, our many honorary officials and our competitors and stakeholders". "David Morgan brings to CAMS a wealth of experience in dealing with complex and time-critical relationships, project management and problem solving. He is the perfect person to lead the organisation through its next stage of development" said Mr Papadopoulos. Mr Morgan will commence duties in June at the CAMS National Office in East Malvern (Melbourne). CAMS is the peak motor sport body for Australia, is the regulator delegated by the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) for Australia, and is recognised by the Australian Sports Commission as the National Sporting Organisation (NSO) for Motor Sport. The above is from the News pages at www.cams.com.au no mention of any experience in any form of motorsports but we should at least give him some time to warm the seat before we start picking on the new guy. Will the new broom sweep clean and get rid of some of the dead wood in the organisation?? |

Problem is, how does a newbie know who the dead wood is? |

Interesting that when the Acting CEO Michael Smith was in on the show last Tuesday, he said that he was confident that his replacement would be someone with a motorsport background.
From what we learn of our man so far, he has no motorsport background and no background in Sports or Major Events administration. According to the CAMS President one of Mr Morgan's first tasks will be to "understand what it is that you, our members, want and need from this confederation and from those of us who serve it. With that in mind he will be spending a significant part of his first months in office, ascertaining and documenting the views of our members and stakeholders." It is interesting the reaction from Acting CEO Michael Smith on Tuesday night when I asked him whether he had put his name forward for the job. It was a very definite NO. |

Maybe someone with seemingly no motorsport background is what CAMS needs. So far, so good, but we will have to wait and see

Probably a good bloke, and seemingly, by his CV, a good manager.
The problem is not who the new CEO is but will the Board let him administer the organisation in the interest of ALL the members rather than a few sectional interests? |

CAMS email announcement contained the details about his motoring interests. Website press release is missing that.

If past efforts are anything to go by I think we already know the answer to that question.

That is clearly a motoring interest.....coz who would be interested in spending their day sitting on the side of the road with the bonnet up.... |

A Jag owner?...well since owning an English car is like looking after a small child in that they require constant attention, leak fluids everywhere as soon as your back is turned and have a tendency to flush the contents of your wallet down the toilet whilst at the same time leaving you vaguely disappointed...then he should have some good background to dealing with the special interests in CAMS!
I wish him good luck, may he guide the ship well. |
