Daytona 24 hr Historic
I went to the first of this festival . Small grids and not particularly interesting.
All change . It had all the making of a special event having attended today Deltas no 1 apprentice Richard Bradley doing over 200 mph on banking A few Europeans but it’s worth a visit Only downside is Daytona . So much better if they had used Sebring and had a double twelve It’s a NASCA track not a road race circuit! |

Long been on my radar, John, but would have to be fitted into a US adventure taking in more events. What’s needed on here is a Historic 2020 US calendar with all the other interesting events like Speed Week and Sebring. Have to agree with your comment about using Sebring, but I haven’t raced at Daytona. Our Cliff Ryan has raced his Mustang there, and I’ve watched his in-car footage. In a relatively slow and heavy (compared with the LMPs etc) sedan the banking looks quite a challenge!

Moving cars to and from not difficult nowadays, especially with Masters running EL and HF1 over there. Both my immediate neighbours and Classic Team Lotus down the road are shipping routinely, and have a base established at Indianapolis for onward transportation. In other words, there’s no excuse except dosh and getting my backside into gear!

When I first went to Sebring ,about 12 years ago ,the SVRA meeting at Sebring had up to 400 entries
Last time I was there , four years ago, down to 130 ish. |

Huge entry with massive diversity both in types and ages of cars- 23 B seems to be the oldest and plenty 3 or 4 year old prototypes running.
Pits packed with a huge range of cars. The rain finished yesterday morning and this morning is grey and cooler. HSR and David Hinton have done a great job to persevere with this event and deserve the success. Great to see smiling racers not *****ing about offiialdom. At dinner last night I had it explained to me that my host could buy a complete new LMP 2 Nissan engine for the same cost as a DFV rebuild so he might be leaving the Shadow in the garage for a while. |

I went to this in 2017 and it was a lot of fun. Very friendly, very open, very relaxed.
Sadly they don't open the huge grandstands so the only view is from the infield. That's fine as it goes, but it's the view from the big stands which makes Daytona special. The other challenge was keeping up with the classes, especially since other HSR classes run their own races as well, often overlapping quite a lot with the 24H Classic groups. The overnight, multi-race format did have quite a high attrition rate so by Sunday some of the fields were very thin. The big plus for me is more modern cars than are often seen in European meetings, which for me means 80s to the present day. There were some cars only a few years old racing 00s and 90s prototypes. Plus, of course, some incredible and wonderful American brutes like 8.8 litre 1980s Corvettes with wheel arches you could camp under. The Sebring equivalent is definitely on my bucket list but unless the big grandstands are opened I won't be going back to Daytona for the Classic. |

The only thing missing is a proper Pre War Sports Car class
They seldom/never run real races for these cars in States and when they do it becomes a stately procession. Well what about that Mr Hinton. |

The larger the entry list, the less track time each entry has.
