Fringe Drivers
Ok folks,
There is no better time to evaluate the fringe V8Supercar drivers than at Bathurst... so here is a simple proposition... Pick one driver for each of the following: A) Most Underrated Driver The driver that you think is the sleeper in the field - the one you don't think gets the recognition for his talent. B) The Best Driver Simple equation - if you were a team owner, which driver would you pick? C) Most Promising Driver The driver that, as a team owner, you would make sure you keep your eye on. The candidates are: Mark Noske John McIntyre Daniel Gaunt Dean Canto Luke Youlden Steve Owen Shane Price Dean Fiore Troy Bayliss David Seiders Andrew Fisher Andrew Jones Brad Jones Nathan Pretty Tony Ricciardello Warren Luff Jonathon Webb Danian Assaillit Brad Lowe Craig Baird Sam Walter Taz Douglas Karl Reindler Greg Ritter David Besnard Owen Kelly Mark Skaife Andrew Thompson Paul Morris Allan Simonsen James Thompson Dale Wood David Wall Leanne Tander |

A- Bezzy (under rated)
B- Skaife (best driver) C- Simonsen (promising) A special mention also to David Wall. I was very impressed when he got into a production car for the first time and put an Evo on pole for the Bathurst 12 hour. Hopefully he'll win the GT championship this year (currently leading it) and find stronger drives. Baird and Luff are also very very good. |

I'm probably going on form this weekend, but:
A) Most Underrated Driver - Tony Ricciardello Has done a good job so far this weekend given the limited time he has had in testing (and drives the wheels of the mighty Alfa Chev Sports Sedan ) - decent pace in a reasonably good car, if they keep out of trouble - the #16 could be a sleeper. B) The Best Driver - Jonathon Webb On current form (he's been solid all weekend and his driving has improved a lot), he'd be my man this weekend. This is after me not rating him that highly previously and I'm always happy to be proven wrong!! C) Most Promising Driver - Damian Assailitt The young bloke is giving a good account of himself and deserves a chance! Very level headed and has proven himself as more than capable in the Fujitsu Series in the past few years. |

Mark Skaife's on the list. Never thought he would be refered to as a 'Fringe Driver'.
The bloke retired about 3 years to early. Personally if this Ford/Holden thing was'nt a drama, I would love to see Skaife in the #4 SBR car. SBR and Skaife just seem like a perfect fit, no running a team, no sitting on TEGA boards and no being the face of a manufacturer. Leave the team running to Ross, engineering to Jimmy and Mark just turns up and races. Back on topic. Underrated: Baird The Best: Skaife Promising: Webb, although pity Moffat's not on that list. Hard to split both of them after their drives today. |

Underrated: Besnard and Ritter, after their efforts today.
Best: Skaife, but excluding him, Owen or Besnard. Most Promising: Gaunt |

Ok, after having a good think about it, I'll have a crack at my own question...
A) Greg Ritter - year after year he does a brilliant job in the enduros, no matter what team or what car without any fanfare or drama. I'm still baffled as to why he has never cemented himself in the main game... B) Luff, Baird, Besnard, Ritter or O.Kelly... what's that...? Only allowed to pick one...? Ummm... Luff...? C) Jonathon Webb seems to be a commonly accepted future talent. I think Karl Reindler is an underrated young talent - helped #25 back onto the lead lap yesterday after all of the early dramas... |

Should there perhaps be a 'D' category- Most Overrated? The driver who consistently gets a drive (perhaps in a top running team) in favour of someone else, but fails to deliver?

A) Most Underrated Driver
David Besnard - Probably guilty of over-driving rubbish cars. We could never fault him in an SBR machine, and he comes out good in the enduro's in good cars. He has some rubbish gear in his full time rides 03 onwards... B) The Best Driver Mark Skaife - 10 months off and still got the tools in the box to compete with the regulars. Was a little shabby in the wet, but I think the car was a little to do with that. As has been said, 3 years too early.... Nearly a dream moment to share but it wasn't to be.... C) Most Promising Driver Karl Reindler - Gets faster and faster in tin tops - but I hope he takes his open wheel skills O/S to get into the formula drives. |

A) Bezzy
B) apart from Skaife, Bezzy C) Jury is still out... with regards to Besnard, although this post is made after Bathurst, he still shone at PI and would be my pick still. Mr Owen didn't do much over the weekend did he? Surprising in a top car... |
