Yeah and as someone else wrote already, toyota was able to do >320km/h as well; difference is that porsche and toyota insane top speed were isolated spots given by seldom and fortuite conditions; BR1 SMP have been constantly in the >320km/h range from FP2. It's quite different.
Anyway, dallara and electronics supplier (is it cosworth?) should really engage in debug mode to find a fix, preventing other issues like dragonspeed car happening again. Just image a BR1 SMP at about 350km/h at the end of first mulsanne sector and suddenly car shuts down |

Good to hear his recovery might be faster than initially forecasted.
After that I doubt he will be back in the BR/Dallara for the Petit-Fuji clash (providing Dragonspeed continues in the championship). |

Yes good he is recovering, but shame his season is ruined. Will he be back this season? Who knows

I took this picture as they were loading the Dragonspeed car onto the truck. It looks to me like the tub has been cut on the top part in front of the screen, although I didn't notice a lot of power tool noise when they were getting Fittipaldi out.
The left front corner was really hanging off, and it looked like there might have been some tub penetration from wheel/suspension, which you can sort of see in the picture just behind the wheel. DPP_5791 by tw_tvam, on Flickr |

Thanks for the photo. Looks a complete write off. Be lucky to see that car out again. Pietro is one lucky boy

The video of the SMP flying.
The car comes through the outside part of the kerbs, maybe the car moved before the exit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5bPgU1n4yI |

Right. That just about settles the 'did it fly or didn't it?' question...... Scary.

I wonder if Elton Julian has seen that video. Might want an explanation for that one too.

It really flew high. It’s very rare you see that sort of thing, so serious questions need answering

Not really Dallara, still way too much unknown about the crash for that. This footage is very inconclusive.

There is a joke in here somewhere about Dallara's low downforce set up but it's too late for me to work it out.
Just glad the lad got out in one piece and no marshals were hurt, AFAIK. |

It does send shivers down your spine just thinking about it. Thankfully Pietro is ok and no one else was involved, as it so easily could have been a different story

Odd thing is that the car is way off the racing line when it took flight. There's a discussion going on at Mulsanne's Corner FB page on if the curbs or sleeping policemen got the nose airborne enough that it took flight.
A previous but similar incident involved an open wheel car at the same corner, too. |

Yeah, until we know why he was all the way over there we can't really say anything about this. With that speed, even a small bump like that could send the car flying over that hill.

The SMP incident is the first flip since the fender holes and fins were implemented that didn't involve compromised aerodynamics(sofar as we can tell).
It will be interesting to learn if the raised lines were solely at fault or if aerodynamic development has created a new issue to be solved - the aero on the current LMPs is VERY different from what was around when those pieces were put in place, after all.
