I think Vettel probably fears Alonso the most, as his main rival. He would still fear Hamilton, but Alonso will be his main rival I think.

I agree it is a few 'mind games' being thrown around with Alonso naming Kubica(probably still trying to get back at Hamilton for their year together at Mclaren) and Hamilton calling Vettel the 'new Mansell'.

Of far more significance than driver talent.

"McLaren made a huge leap forward -- by copying our exhaust, it has to be said,"

Adrian Newey takes a little dig at McLaren.

Fortunately for Red Bull, Adrian Newey's are much harder to come by than driver talent.

Didn't McLaren drop the new exhaust Adrian Newey is talking about in favor of a more "simple" design?
If so, I fail to see what the dig is.

No. McLaren had originally used a very eleborate exhaust design of its own that didn't work. Now they have copied Adrian Newey's simpler design that does work.

My understanding was they dropped it after Friday practice and went with conventional exhausts mainly because the new exhaust was creating most of the unreliability they have experienced in testing, I guess due to heat build up and its effect on other peripherals such as lets say the oil coolers (I guess sidepod mounted) not cooling enough with the exhausts running where they do.

I guess the spin off of that is that more airflow is required for cooling purposes with the front facing exhausts...... which means less air being available for aero and downforce. As well as less air for aero altering the aero balance of the car it will clearly also compromise downforce .

Which in turn affects / accelerates tyre wear and degradation.

I don't think that McLaren used their own design exhaust on the car after the Barcelona test. It was quite clear from simulation testing that the new simpler exhaust was a step forward.

Interesting how the thread has gone from Hamilton's comment about Vettel being the new Mansell, to exhaust systems. It was obviously a load of hot air.

ROC....with Vettel beating Gronholm. I seem to remember Kovalainen beating Michael Schumacher in a Ferrari and Loeb in a rally car. They had to teach Heikki how the car operates at the starting line. Does that make him better than Hamilton or Vettel?

Lewis Hamilton has described rival Fernando Alonso as "incredibly talented" "His raw speed is just insane - great, great speed," says the Englishman of his 2007 McLaren team-mate in an in-depth interview with Murray Walker. (F1 Racing magazine).

Alonso is the new.....err......oh that's right. Prost ?

However, Alonso also has moments of generosity towards his fellow drivers.

It's all rather lovey-dovey.

^ (Fernando reading Lewis's compliments in the paper).

However, I believe the top drivers do have a lot of respect for their rivals' efforts and talent, as they do for their own.

Besides, re: Hamilton and Alonso, there was never much animosity. Alonso and Ron Dennis had a rather more difficult relationship.

Maybe there is some truth in Hamilton rating Alonso more than Vettel. Many (including myself do). Vettel has a lot of potential, but we have yet to see him win the hard way, from behind, and look decisive and assured in overtaking.

He certainly overtook Button very decisively (if not actually doing it within the letter of the law), and perhaps he has no intention of ever starting any further back than the front row of the grid?

He is highly rated by many, and rightly so! And he's most certainly not the new Mansell!

Both Lewis's lady and Fernando's wife are pop singers, so perhaps they can duet?

I'd forgotten his Button overtake this year when saying that. He does seem to be all-improved for 2011. I still think it will be fascinating to see him driving through the field but you make a good point about not intending on starting any further back. There will be moments where it all goes wrong and he has to come through from behind, but with his superior confidence now and the existing accomplishment of being WDC (thus relieving some pressure), he has that happiness Button acquired after winning the title and this will only serve to make him harder to beat.

Lewis is simply looking at F1 through the eyes of his childhood when Senna, Prost and Mansell were F1 idols and transposing that view onto todays scene.

Relatively harmless and innocent - although given the penchant for cyber exaggeration and disecting every comment and extrapolating it into nothingness probably not a wise comment to make in public.

It's a shame that he could only come up with the name "Mansell" to compare to one of his current main rivals. Not that Mansell was a particularly second rate driver, just not in the same class as Prost or Senna, by all accounts.

Vettel must have spat his 'soft drink' out after hearing about that one!

Lewis has been in this buisness for the last 15 years, he knows how it works and he knew exactly what he was saying. Anyone who honestly believes otherwise is a tad naive.

I agree with the first bit of your post, clearly a proper enthusiast is young Vettel! not so sure about the second biit, as there's always been the extroverts and the more surly drivers with no apparent personality?

It's funny he mentions Rindt. He is the sort of driver Seb resembles in style and spirit. Either that or it's Bellof....

I only mentioned the add on because I have heard some drivers say that they have no knowledge of and /or no interest of what happened in the past... And that comment had disappointed me at the time...

Like my comment about Lewis' Mansell reference. Can people be allowed to express something without someone taking something out of it that was never intended.

I am not aiming this at chunterer's comment(because I know this is not true of him) but it just seems to me that the forum is peppered with arguments that arise from inconsequential things that are simply one view of a situation and others seem unable to accept that someone else may be able to extend a more gracious view than they are able to.
