What has Poss got to do with Puke? I wasn't aware he'd competed much there.
And there was a monument to Poss put up at the Queenstown hillclimb which was much more approriate than anything Pukekohe could have done. |

Possum Bourne's home town is Pukekohe. It's still the home to his wife - Peg,and his children - Taylor, Spencer, and Jazlin, and to the businesses he had - Possum Bourne Performance Centre and Possum Bourne Motorsport.
He was born and raised there and that was the where he first started racing, initially with the Pukekohe (or perhaps it was Auckland) Car Club. Possum's Prizegiving was held there, and he was buried nearby. To say that Possum had nothing to do with Pukekohe township itself would be hugely insensitive to his memory and those who have survived him. If I remember rightly, he did have an involvement with Pukekohe Park Raceway in his early motorsport days. |

Fair point - I had thought you meant the circuit specifically.

He actually raced a Subaru Legacy that he prepared for sports sedans( basically just lowered) a couple of times back when Francevic ran Petch's BP Sierra and Freeth ran the Nissan?(I think it was the Nissan). It was at the xmas/new year meetings.
Murph was racing a single seater with sponsorship from a lottery thing at the time. Possum was a life member of the Pukekohe Car Club and quite regularly was involved in club meetings in his early days with the RX3 that he bought off Rod Millen as well as special stages during the local club rally that were held at Pukekohe Raceway. The rally cars used to do a few laps in reverse direction. If i remember right the International did as well back when the Audis were out in NZ. I remember them growling there way around the track. So yes Possum did have a lot to do with the track itself as well as growing up near, living in and setting up his business in Pukekohe. Last edited by fordo; 15 Aug 2004 at 21:36. |

Hey wasn't there an award named after him for Rookie of the Year for the Bathurst 1000 before the big seperation in 1997. If i'm right i think Craig Lowndes won it in 1994 and Steve Richards in 1995. Why don't they bring that back?

AVESCO probably wouldn't reserect it as the Bathurst 1000 is now minor compared to the series. Or so they reckon. What does the papers and the general public concerntrate on more Mr Cochrane? But we won't go into that.
The Championship has the Mike Kable award for rookie of the year but that is classed for both the V8 Supercar Championship and the Konica Championship which I personally believe is wrong but thats their decision not mine. Personally it would be great to reserect the Denny Hulme Award for the Bathurst 1000. To see a great man honoured in that way would be excellent. As he was retired when he decided to make a comeback to race in the Bathurst 1000 and other touring car events in the 80's. Also where abouts is this memoriam for Mike Burgmann? Is it somewhere near the Dunlop Bridge on the other side of the wall? |

THe council worker was killed in 1987 (I think) when they were building the concrete walls around the track. Some equipment that was being used touched the overhead powerlines.
Why would the plaque for Tom Sulman be at the elbow? He died at the end of Con rod and not the start. |
