The best era in Formula Ford racing?!
The 1980's saw an explosion of interest in what was already a mighty formula, Formula Ford 1600. The decade produced some fantastic racing and started many future motorsport legends on their paths to success.
If you would like to relive the memories of this era or would like to contribute your own stories from this time then please visit www.goldenera-formulaford.com. A new site that is attemting to re-capture this great time in motorsport history. A register of chassis built during the 1980's is currently growing on the site and we would really appreciate more information on these chassis to build as comprehensive a register as possible. |

Thanks for this MrGoldenEra.
I remember the 80's period very well, as the RAC and Esso series often supported BTCC or F3 on the support bills. 1981 is one everyone will point to but I think 1985 was arguably the greatest year for depth of talent with 1987 and maybe even 1990 also being classics? Would you like to share some of your favourite memories for the benefit of our posters? |

Personally I think the 70's were better, but that's only my opinion.
Formula Ford became too technical and expensive in the 80's which killed off many of the little (and bigger) constructors and weekend racers. Still good racing even if the numbers were declining. |

I agree that during the 1980's costs did sart to rise, however so did the professionalism and quality of the teamsand drivers competing. This in turn made giant killing acts (pretty much absent today) even more remarkable. I know he was in a good car (Swift FB4), however Dave Coyne's achievment in beating a lot of "hot shoes" to third in the 87 Festival was a great memory. Right throughout the 1980's grid numbers were huge and the racing fantastic. I belive it was the decade where there was just the right mix between prestige being generated by young guns using the formula to prove their stock and club level competitors also being able to compete. |
