Four former Formula One World Champions and a five-time World Motorbike Champion are going to contest the ‘Race of Legends’, on 16th July, at Nuremberg’s Norisring.

Formula One World Champions Emerson Fittipaldi (1972 and 1974 World Champion, 144 Grands Prix contested, 14 wins), Nigel Mansell (1992/187/56), Alain Prost (1985, 1986, 1989 and 1993, 199/51) and Jody Scheckter (1979/112/10) as well as five-time World Motorbike Champion Mick Doohan (1994 to 1998, 137/54) will contest a €500,000 charity race. This event, contested with DTM cars of Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Opel, represents the first time that these five motor racing legends will battle it out with each other. “Never before in the DTM history, there has been a race like this,” explained ITR Chairman Hans Werner Aufrecht. “This is an additional highlight for both the crowds on the Norisring grandstands and the TV audience. We are truly proud that these former World Champions agreed to enter the DTM cars for this charity event.”

Four-time F1 World Champion Alain Prost tested a DTM car, on the Monday following the Oschersleben DTM weekend and was impressed: “The DTM cars are fantastic. I had a lot of fun out there on the track,” said the ‘Professor’. The other ‘Legends’ will test the Audi A4 DTM, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and the Opel Vectra GTS V8 on the Friday of the Norisring weekend.

I think this will be very good

The topic was already discussed in this thread. http://tentenths.com/forum/showthread.php?t=71285

It looks like Saleen S7R gets to take home the 6pack of beer. Prost seems to be coming up on top. Does it have to do with the fact he's still keeping his driving skills sharp by doing some limited racing while the others have let their driving skills get a bit rusty?? Or he just a good driver to begin with? Hakkinen has done pretty well for a guy who hasn't raced for a a year or two??

Well, still looking forward to this. I never really got to see Mansell & Prost 'qualify' against each other...since this isn't exactly a race is it.

Should still be great fun though.

Prost wins it. Didn't translate too well into enthralling TV...they should take a few lessons from the Alan Gow promotional cookbook.

Doesn't matter about fair turns each in cars they can't break...we're quite happy with pole in a hat, and a dozen bendable Cupra's for our legends to race in!

Nice to see those drivers. Shame the spectacle could only be described as pathetic, at best.

A "race" would have been nice. Perhaps too much to ask though.

carlton Kirby was on form today. When he wasn't insulting his entire audience he was just filling in the commentary with the usual lines he uses:

"There you go."

and...

"Hahahahahahahahaha."

He's not the greatest commentator. He is largely entertaining, but not cut out as a serious commentator at all.

So all 6 drivers took to the track at the same time and took out current spec cars? I guess the manufacturers didn't want to risk their '05/'04 spec cars being written off so they didn't have the world champions race against the regular DTM drivers? Perhaps next year?

I turned it off after a few laps, they couldn't have conjured up a more boring event if they'd tried. Wasted oppertunity me thinks.

The only good part of the show was the the fact they collected 500,000 € for charity.

Considering the race the 'non-masters' put on the following day, hmmm.

Since they were using older machinery, I guess the manufacturers just didn't have enough manpower to run another 6 cars during the real races. Now THAT would have definitely been exciting!
