Supercars freedoms

I see the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has declared illegal the Victorian Sprint Car body in restricting where Sprint Cars can run in Victoria.

They were ruled to be in breech of the Competition and Consumer Ac

The Sprint car body has accepted the ruling and will modify its operation.

https://www.speedcafe.com/2022/03/14...investigation/

This will open a can of worms for Supercars.

Basically it would seem a Supercar could run wherever it liked, and use extra time for testing and driver mileage.

A very interesting development?

It will also open a can of worms for Carrera Cup,Touring Car Masters etc.Basically it seems it is illegal to impose restrictions on competitors about when and where they can compete.
Who will be the first to race outside their “sanctioned” series and will the category management be brave/foolish enough to do anything about it?

TCR would be worse - TCR intl has the right to void the logbook of a car that races in a non-TCR sanctioned event...

Nobody is stopping anybody from running a Supercar that isn't part of the main game currently - you can do anything and run a car anywhere, you just can't go back and then run it in the main game series.

This caper with Speedway and insurance and stuff has been brewing for a long time.

It is made more complicated in Supercars because the IP of the cars belongs to Supercars - not so in any of the other classes.

This is a battle that has been fought in tennis, cricket, rugby league and is just kicking off in golf. When it gets to court it has always ended one way and that is never in the favour of organisations attempting to restrict peoples right to compete and earn money.

Back in the bad old days of CAMS any member of CAMS who competed in speedway had his/her competition license revoked, full stop end of story. How times have changed for the better.

Wasnt there also issues with SC drivers that ran in events run by Bob Jane? Or was that more Down the ladder stuff? ISTR it was something to do with Jane not being prepared to pay CAMS inflated sanctioning fees and thus CAMS blackballed his venues and any drivers that ran in AUSCAR and other stuff at his venues.

Very happy to be corrected on what is an old blokes memory based stuff.

CAMS verses the speedway rabble was a very interesting civil war in the late 1970's.

CAMS people believed that they were the only gods that could run motorsport in Australia. Turn up a motorsport event and strut around in your suit, and play Hitler was a great way to enhance the motorsport experience for a competitor- exclude his car from an event because some conceived illegality or paperwork issue that you have come up with.

Certain speedway promoters in that era run a very good operations and were getting healthy fields in all divisions and mega crowds-something that CAMS were losing under their stewardship.

I worked for a guy that had a a disagreement with CAMS about racing is Formula 500 at the local speedway and doing some circuit racing, he told CAMS to f#### off and raced speedway until he retired.

Gene Cook was told to make a decision about his speedway driving or circuit racing by CAMS officials at Symmons Plains-loved to have been a fly on the wall in that meeting. Gene took the speedway option and built a big following along with a stellar driving career on both dirt and ashpalt tracks in Tasmania and Liverpool speedway. In 1983 he did the Bathurst 1000 with John WAlker in an Rx-7, so the war must have finished by then.

Wayne Negus was interviewed during the '76 Hardie Ferodo and stated that CAMS is not happy with him driving speedway in WA.

Often threats were made, but not sure how many drivers were actually banned by CAMS.

The last time CAMS tried this nonsense was the 1991 Indy Car Carnival at Surfers.

The event was not sanctioned by CAMS and they threatened to cancel the licences of any drivers who competed. Needless to say no licences were cancelled.

Back to the original point, personally I struggle to see how this is likely to impact Supercars in any way. The ACCC finding was about all classes being made available to all tracks and that is the case with Supercars now (provided that a commercial deal can be reached & there is room on the calendar).

There may well be precedents arising from the finding that change the say some things are done but apart from that, I'm struggling to see anything from this that passes over.

Although "CAMS" no longer penalises those who race in other disciplines of 4 wheeled racing (Drag, Speedway, etc) they do put pressure on those who compete or officiate under a rival sanctioning body such as AASA.

Was that due to a certain governing body or due to excessive flatulence?

Sorry - the devil made me post that

I don't think this ruling is what you think it is.
Would be more akin to Supercars not allowing non-supercars sanctioned classes to run at tracks than limitations on where/how you can run a Supercar.
