The Privateers
In the last few issues of Auto Action they have done some stories on the privateers in the ATCC.
So far they have covered Garry Wilmington, Peter McLeod, Ron Dickson and Steve Masterton. Interesting what some of these part time race car drivers achieved result wise, in car design and development all on a very limited budget. Steve Masterton must have been Australia fastest apprentice builder. Always great memories of Steve driving the Ford Capri in the Better Brakes series at Amaroo Park and also at Bathurst. The Mastertons seem to be smart engaging Bo Seton to work on the Capri's and signing Colin Bond to drive the second car. Then into the big league with a Ford Falcon, as a fulltime driver. Just unfortunate that a building downturn caused Steve, to curtail his racing career. Peter McLeod was another driver that seemed to go about his racing in a very professional manner, claiming the 1983 Australian endurance Championship and a third place in the 1983 ATTC championship. The Slick50 Mazda RX-7 always looked fantastic on the track. Who could forget Ron Dickson and the big Z-28 Camaro's especially at Amaroo Park. Gary Willmington budget racer that was loyal to the blue oval for many years, then raced Jaguars and a TWR Commodore. |

Steve M was very inventive in the development of front bumpers.

That is mentioned in the article, along with the $1,000.00 fine from CAMS and making front page of Auto Action.

I take it that Mr Masterton and Mr Grice were not on good terms.
Watching a DVD on Amaroo Park from 1980, Steve Masterton is interviewed post race by Mike Raymond and he compliments the gentlemen drivers on a great race unlike drivers like Alan Grice. Anyone know what caused the unhappiness? |

Grice and Masterton also had a coming together during the opening round of the 1983 AMSCAR Series which left both sides unhappy with eachother, and Masterton expressing that on the podium at the end of the meeting. |
