I can think of a couple of things that might explain no doubleheader at Detroit:

1. The teams don’t like doubleheaders. And I'd imagine that teams really don't like doubleheaders at street circuits, given the higher likelihood for car damage. You have a crash on Saturday, the car is too badly damaged, and you DNS the Sunday race, which really hurts you in the season standings. Ever since Detroit became a double header in 2013, I've never heard of the potential for DNSs for the Sunday race ever being an issue, though I have heard teams have been less than impressed with paddock facilities, especially if it rains, turning the paddock into a muddy mess. I would have thought teams would be more concerned with DNSs at a double header on an oval, given the nature of oval racing.

Maybe it is to appease IMSA.

If I was still a mechanic in the series I might not be in favor of the Detroit double header, but since when does it matter what the crew members think?


As a fan I'd be happy to see double headers at Texas, Road America, Iowa, Gateway, Mid Ohio, maybe other venues. Races late on Saturday and Sunday afternoon. I'd like to see all race weekends with the cars on track Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

He didn't go to IndyCar as a one off to race in one season, it was a career move and it looks like it's paying off, having secured the drive with Andretti.

Big John has his faults but has always been devastatingly fast.

He has the tools to dominate in the US if he gets his brain the right place.

He was subject to a fair amount of criticism for his on track antics in F1 and he has shown a tendency to revert to that, since coming to IndyCar. The most recent example was the argy bargy with Jimmie Johnson at the Cork Screw at Laguna Seca last weekend. He doesn't need to do that.

I think if they find someone to fully find it yes, Sato ain't bringing that much money it appears. Harvey's name is always mentioned as the replacement in Sato's seat. This weekend MP mentioned Sato to the Grosjean seat with DCR/RWR

Also - this gives Mike Shank a couple of really great options for third drivers in the long IMSA races... Pagenaud and Helio both know how to wheel prototypes of course. Cool.

Let's add Toronto to that list! We did it in 2013 (successfully, especially if your name is Scott Dixon) and 2014 (also successfully with two races on Sunday... not so good if you sat through the downpour on Saturday though).

Well JJ and Grosjean get to have their own Rookie Orientation Program outside of the scheduled combined ROP and tire test with Pato and Helio. And of course everyone on Racer thinks millions will tune in to watch both of them turn their laps.

Remember Indy rookie testing is terribly boring, 10 laps at 205-210, 15 at 210-215 and 15 at over 215. It took Alonso 50 laps to record that, 10 over minimum.
