Gonzalo Rodriguez 9 years on

I believe it's practically 9 years ago this weekend that Urugyuan F3000 star an F1 aspirant Gonzalo 'Gonchi' 'Gonzo' Rodriguez was killed in qualifying for the Laguna Seca CART/Champcar round in his Penske.

Gonzalo was one of my heroes, his press on maximum attack driving style was a joy to behold and on his day he really did have the talent to beat anyone.

He was also a highly approachable bloke and was happy to stop and chat away in the paddock about his next race or racing in general.

During a classic couple of years for driving talent in F3000, his Monaco (win) and Spa (recovery to 2nd) performances in 1999 were breathtaking.

Still, 9 years on it's such a tragedy that Uruguay lost a real star and a potential F1 driver.

He was a throwback to the old days or natural talent, say what you like, drive your heart out and enjoy every moment of racing a car.

Rest in peace Gonzalo.

robert2000 should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Gonzalo was definitely F1 material. I can't believe it's been nine years already.

Rest in peace.

I can't add any more than has already been said.

Check out the website of the Gonzalo Rodriguez Foundation;

A fine and worthy way to commemerate a great lost talent.
