Mercedes to buy Mc Laren ?

I don't know where to put this, so I start this thread, but Ayse could have a better idea and move it : Mercedes could buy the 60% of Mc Laren they don't own yet (MotorLegend news), and build a real concurrence for Ferrari, including, at least, a GT car (that customers could improve for the track, I hope !)...

Any news, comments, or opinion ?

Karl Kling should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
There was an article about this in Car Magazine. I don't remember exactly what they said but i think they suggested 3 road cars, one to rival each Ferrari. There should be a Supercar, like the old McLaren F1 (for the Enzo), a 2+2 to match the Ferrari 575 and a small twoseater to match the 360 (or Porsche 911). They should all be powered by V10 engines.

I don't have the magazine available right now but i can get you more details later.

McLaren will be manufacturing the SLR so it would make sense for Merc to just buy the whole show. Personally, I don't like Merc but I agree with everything that gets Ron Dennis out of racing.

This is potentially very exciting news.

sorry splatz. londons park lane(opposite hyde park) has all the prestige car showrooms - porsche, jaguar, bmw all have premises. mclaren have a tiny showroom on a corner....basically just big enough to hold one mclaren gt-r. i ride past there on my scooter twice a day...and there always seems to be at least one person gawping in amazement thru the window at the car on display.

Hmm I read in AUTOSPORT magazine a couple of months back that Mclaren could be entering the Mclaren gt-r in the NGT class of FIA GT for 2004. Now if Mercedes are buying Mclaren could this mean a possible factory assault for 2004? It would all make sense, Mercedes buying Mclaren now I mean particulary as the FIA are allowing factory teams for 2004.

You mean Mercedes actually want to run a car with a BMW engine? How does that help them?

If Mercedes buy McLaren, then the last remaining McLaren in Japan in racing (YES THERE IS ONLY ONE LEFT ) will be forced to pull out. Which they may do anyway.

Just when I'm planning to go to see a race too. In June or July.

To Japan, either to the Autopolis circuit in Kyushu, or Mine Circuit in Honshu, I guess it depends on how they juggle the calender. With all the changes to Fuji Raceway and some to Suzuka things may get changed around a bit.

Not at all interested in the British Touring cars because we have no coverage in Australia for about 3-4 years or more) and I've got little interest in Ford Mondeos. Just a personal thing I guess. I know there is some good talent in the series but its not my thing. I've been to England before and saw the Group C cars at Donington in 1990 and RAC Rally. I wish I had stayed until 1995 and 1996 well and 1997 and 1998 too, for the BPR and FIA-GT series.

I think Brits don't appreciate how lucky they are to have so much motorsport nearby, (including Le Mans of course.)

I would be one of the folk in London with his nose pressed against the glass worshiping the McLaren. If only...

That's why I'm off to see the last one that races, and I'll get to do a genuine pit walk for about $35 - $40 approx 15 pounds. Pretty cool!

The F1 in N-GT......

You do know about the rule that homologating a car from a bigger class "down" to a smaller class is prohibited?
