WMC (World Minors Championship)

In the first 9 races we have had a fixed pattern with the first 5 positions achieved by the mercs, the ferraris and Max, with only "exception" of Gasly substituting the "unfortunate" Leclerc in Monaco.

It means, not unexpectedly, that the three major teams are, almost literally, miles ahead of the rest, aka minor teams, or, as Toto could say , minnows teams.

I find the fight of the other 7 teams (well, 6 teams) pretty worthy to follow and, for me, the true interest in the races (and other sessions) is to watch the ups and downs of those teams and of course their drivers.

So, I am introducing "officially" the World Minors/Minnows Championship, i.e. the championship of the rest, formed by 14 drivers (ok, 12). Like I feel I am the Bernie Eclestone of this championship and I am not very fond of the current scoring system (for technical reasons), I will use the most traditional scoring system, that I like very much: 9-6-4-3-2-1 points (we have to take in count that we have 6 less cars.)

In a slightly more serious(?) tone, this WMC is better suited to show the performances of those drivers/teams than the real WDC, deluged by mercs, reds and maxes.

So far, after Austria, the M-clasification is:

The second and third columns in the totals are further scoring methods that are not particularly interesting now (or ever).

There is a lot of fight, with wins by 5 drivers and 4 teams (out of 7 teams).

By now, Sainz has a clear advantage and the next drivers are closely packed. It is interesting that Mac has the two first drivers; also noteworthy is that Norris has won two times.

Another interesting point is to see how the best positions are occupied by the best drivers, not just by the cars they drive: Sainz, Raikkonen, Ricciardo, Perez, Magnussen (the exception is Norris, and it speaks well about his skill). In contrast, Hulk, Stroll, Grosjean and Giovinazzi are floating a lot lower (to be honest, Hulk is not so low as the rest).

Toro Rosso is clearly below par with only one second position in one race out of 9 races. Williams continues its rough path, but hopefully the great team will recover some of the performance gap.

Now if only we could get a seperate channel that broadcast the WWC with just minor reference to to the top 5 we could shut up the complainers who say there is no REAL racing in F1.

Perhaps with the help of a video edition in real-time, with a proper AI, we could erase those 6 cars in the TV broadcasting!


Or maybe we could give prizes in two categories, like LMP1 y LMP2 in endurance racing .

(BTW, I did a blunder in the title of the thread! It should be WMC instead of WWC!) LOL

Sainz increases his advantage, now he is more than two races ahead of the rest.

Good performances of Kvyat in the last two races, leaping ahead from a lowly position to the pursuing pack of 4 drivers (RIC, RAI, NOR and himself).

Disaster for Perez who go backwards 13 points against the leader.

Germany was a bad day for many of the contenders. Ricciardo, Raikkonen and Norris were unlucky... undoubtedly producing a big smile in Sainz and Kvyat!

Sainz, with 3 wins and 3 seconds is clearly ahead in regularity with the big points. Ricciardo has 2 wins and one second and Norris and... Magnussen have two wins. (BTW, Haas is becoming a kind of crazy team...). Curiously, Kimi has not won (yet) but has reached podiums regularly.

In a completely naive way, I think Ricciardo and Raikkonen have more potential than Norris and Kvyat (observing the distribution of points in each race).

Six drivers have won races so far, out of 14(12) drivers; it is about half of them. I think the Minor Formula is working well.

impressive for Sainz considering he had a pretty woeful start of the season.

not sure i fully understand Ric being 2nd though.

i may not be understanding correctly but is RIC benefiting more from the top 6 being excluded then say RAI who has twice as many actual top 10 finishes (and to a lessor extent also benefiting more than NOR and KVT)?

About the RAI-RIC situation, I think most of it is the fact that official WDC table is updated with Hungary, and our WMC table was the old one without Hungary. Hungary was a great advantage of Kimi over the Australian. If we compare RAI vs RIC after Germany and after Hungary, the two drivers' positions are not so different. In a direct comparisons, Raikkonen beats Ricciardo 7-5 (after Hungary), and it more or less is reflected in both WDC and WMC.

In fact, I was going to post the updated table with the Hungary GP. Thus, so be it!

Even more advantage for Sainz! As chillibowl says, the first races were "mediocre" for Carlos Jr, but since then he has beaten Kimi, his closest competitor, 9 consecutive times! He dominates completely all the others, beating Kimi 9-3 and Norris 8-3.

With 9 races to go, Sainz has now an almost three races advantage in points. That is a lot.

Currently the situation has like 4 tiers. Tier 0 is just Sainz, Tier 1 are the principal drivers of other teams (+Norris), Tier 2 are the secondary drivers in those teams and finally Tier 3 are... a sort of unfortunate drivers who, for whatever reasons, don't get the due results. (let's note I am not even talking about Williams... but perhaps we will be able to do it soon... hopefully).

Teams are accordingly divided in tiers. Most of teams are in the middle tier, having one driver in the contending pack (Alfa,Renault,Toro Rosso, and "The Pink One" ) and the other in the secondary pack (well, Giovinazzi is not even in that pack). There is one super team (McLaren) with two drivers in the lead part of the table. And there is a trailing team (Haas) without any driver in the contending pack and one driver behind the secondary pack.

About teams classification in points (and showing wins and 2nds too), let's see the next table.
