i will have a crack at em.

1. Gendebien = gender + bine

2.Depailler = de + paul + lee + er

3.Elio = eel + leo or elle (as in Mcpherson) + leo

4.Behra = Beer (yum) ra

thats how i pronounce them ..may not be right but it works for me

SNH that's horrid!

Marshal, I agree with you on the pronounciation of Depailler.

Elio I have always heard pronounced "Ellie - oh".

Gendebien - definitely soft "G" as in "gender".

Behra I always pronounced as "Bay-ra", perhaps I'm wrong.

While we're on the subject of pronounciation, can I ask for settlement of a couple of my bugbears.

Idiosyncratic rallycross driver Martin Schanche. I've heard "Shanker", "Skanker", even "Skanky". Which is correct? Do we have any Norwegian correspondents here?

Secondly, that old problem, Porsche. Ever since I was knee-high to a hubcap, I've been told to pronounce the "e", making "Porsh-er", but when talking, I know that I am in a minority, most people uttering "Porsh", with a silent "e". It's not just a British thing. I've heard people from all over Europe using both versions, and frankly I'm confused.

I thought Schanche was always pronounced to rhyme with self abuser.

While I'm here, I thought that Behra was bare - a, whereas the siamese prince (Bira) was beer - a, but we're really just splitting hairs here!

interesting isnt it how we all pronounce names and things just a bit different..and I must say TimD that after thinking about the depailler one..i do believe your way is the correct term..

ive always hears "skanky" pronounced that way or "shanka" sometimes ..either way the guys a bit of a nutter from what Ive seen..I say Porsche with a silent e.

another one ...500cc bike rider Alex Criville..hear in Oz he is Criv - ill..but in Europe he is Criv-e-ay...I have no idea on that one..im even confused on mazzacane or mazzacarny.

good fun though isnt it ?

Surely this must be most productive post to date!

Anyway, here is how I've been pronouncing names :

Gendebien
Gen-der-bee-an (hard 'G' and 'bien' pronounced the French way)

Elio
Eel-leo

Depailler
Dee-pay-er

Behra
Bear-uh

How about Caracciola, Coulthard or Priaulx (pree-oh?).

Here goes;

Caracciola - car atch ee o la
Coulthard - Cool tard or thard or thud, no one seems to know. Perhaps its best pronounced Dee Cee

I agree with you rendition of Priaulx.

Just thought of another Raul Boesel (but I might have misspelt the surname).

Gendebien, Elio, Depailler and Behra are all pronounced the way Graham said.
He is also right about Priaulx. (pree-oh).
Carraciola is pronounced the way Marshal says.
Raul Boesel is pronounced 'ra-ooh-l Bwosell'.
And Porsche is pronounced 'Porsh-uh.'

Charming

You'd have thought by now that 'Dee Cee' would have told people how his name is pronounced...

Actually, G, I'm a Somerset boy originally. And it was there at my grandfather's knee, that I was taught to pronounce the Porsche's E.

Wow, that all rhymes. Hey, I'm a poet, and I didn't know it.

Ciao.

I worked with a German guy, since retired, and asked him about the Porsche issue. He said that in the South of Germany they pronounce it "porsh-uh" and in the north it was pronounced "porsh". I guess it really only matters how the family pronounces it and I have no idea.

My opinion on some of the others...

Achille Varzi... Uh-kill-e var-zee (accent on the zee part)
Depailler... Dep-pie-yeh
