What is a Gateway Timeout?

I have had several of these this afternoon.

There are lots of these happening it is a network fault of sorts it may be more apparent on certain ISP and not on others.

I see it sometimes using Freeserve anytime.

I often get gateway timeouts when I'm on 10-tenths forums too.

I have to confess that I've never had one of these... I've never even heard of them! Do you receive an error message from the server or is it one of those Microsoft type errors which come from your browser ?

I am not sure but I think it is more than likely a server time out message where the packets on the return path are getting scattered and the browser can't reconsitute them correctly.

The 'Gateway timeout' is a cache engine error message. Many ISPs nowadays use transparent web caching, so your computer connects to the cache, and the cache gets pages from 10 tenths.

The error message is showing because there's a problem with the cache, or it can't get to the 10 tenths server.

Ah, thanks for that Mr Y! I obviously haven't received one as I have a decent ISP... now i'm shot of Demon anyway!
