1988 Tooheys Top 10 Shootout
Watching the DVD on the top ten shoootouts from 1985 to 92, the 1988 shoutout is certainly interesting.
The 1988 shootout isn’t for grid position for the big race but for $40,000 in prize money. Everyone’s favourite Scotsman, Mr Walkinshaw protested about the Ford Sierras of Dick Johnson, John Bowe, Andrew Miedecke, Colin Bond, Tony Longhurst, but not the Allan Moffat/ Klaus Niedzwiedz entry. This result in the five Sierras being pulled apart to be inspected, only problem there was no road registered Ford Sierras to compare components with! As Dick said, Tom would lodge a protest about the colour of his own bagpipes, What a clustef##k, expecting drivers to go out an doing a flying lap in a car that has been pulled apart and then rebuilt without doing a few laps to make sure everything is working. As Mke Raymond said it was a bit controversial! The top ten shootout became the bakers dozen with the inclusion of Larry Perkins and Peter Brock in the BMW. Any of the ten tenths members at Bathurst that year, and add to the story? The Moffat ANZ Sierra did look a million dollars in that very simple paint scheme. The other noticeable thing is the big improvement in the track, the facilities at Bathurst from 30 years ago. |

The two HSV Commodores were also protested and found to be illegal.

Very unsporting of Queensland’s favourite son to lodge a protest against the poor little Scottish team.
Love the way Dick, and his team manager Neil Lowe are using a pen and paper to lodge the protest. |

When did the ARDC give up their discretionary power to include anyone in Hardies Heroes / Tooheys Top Gun? Cars from lower than top 10 to be included, 11 cars in qualifying in 1985, 12 in 1988 etc

Similarly the car swapping to make sure they could have non stop Brock and Moffat in the race was an even bigger joke. |

Driver cross-entry was all part of the rules during Group C & Group A, and pretty much all multi-car teams deployed the tactic.
That Brock was the only person locally who could utilise the tactic to win shouldn't be held against him. On topic and relevant to the 1988 great race, Larry put Walkinshaw into his car towards the end when running 3rd, to give him a win should the race go their way. He received a blown engine for his trouble... The prior year the German factory BMW drivers swapped in and out of their team cars so often no one really knew who was in which car at any point in time. It gave them enough points in the end to claim the WTCC title, something which is never ever complained about on here. |

Car swapping was also nothing unique to Bathurst, it was the norm in motor racing around the world. |

They weren't the only team to swap drivers around between cars either- I can recall Walkinshaw swapping Win Percy into one of the other TWR Rovers for the sake of championship points at least once during the latter part of the '86 ETCC after their car had broken during Tom's opening stint. |
